I can handle one player having a off night but the whole team seemed out of sync,we couldn't get a run going all night.Hopefully this is short term and we get back to out hustling our opponents.
I agree sometimes I feel he should be on point instead of Gesell.I was pretty comfortable anytime Clemmons had the ball in his hands.
Don't think it's over the top as long as the team learns from it.When we get to tourney time it's one and done so they need to relax and play like we've seen them play.We all know they have a bad taste in their mouths so I think everything will be fine.If we come out and tank Sun. against NW then we can start wondering like 2 yrs ago.
Agreed. Misleading title to the article. To say the Hawks got away from their winning formula suggests they decided to play a different style of game. They didn't. They shot poorly, and it affected other elements of the game. It happens. They'll move on.I think this write up tonight is just a bit over the top. Listen Iowa has played a brutal schedule and tonight this team was flat and played another very good team..
Iowa is who it is. The team must be carried by Uthoff or its a loss. Point guard situation is a joke. Every end of half play fails with his isolation, never works, never will, and he is rotten at the line, which is the recipe for a loss. Why can't we find a point guard who can make a free throw?

That's not at all what the title or the column (opinion piece backed by facts) say or suggest. Of course they didn't go into Maryland and scrap the game plan on which they worked all week. Teams don't lose or play poorly on purpose (except the Sixers).
Just because it wasn't intentional doesn't mean they can't and didn't get away from their game plan. And they didn't adjust to Maryland getting up in them by driving. They settled for jump shots and quick shot, especially early in the game. Many of the turnovers were unforced. The help defense often was a step slow.
This team got away from playing the way it has throughout the season. It wasn't intentional. It happens.
It's OK to be critical of our teams. The guys are critical of themselves. It's part of the process.
I don't think anything less of this team because of last night. It's still one of the best teams in the league...when it plays together.
Honestly, folks. I don't think our opinions on this thing differ much, if at all.
We played poorly against a Maryland team that was pedestrian as well. I didn't think we played near to our ability because we suffers from uncharacteristic mistakes. I pointed out that despite our poor play, we were position to win in the closing minutes on the road against the No. 8 team that's won 25 in a row at home. I didn't write that the season was over or the roof was caving in.
Was I critical in parts of the opinion piece? Sure. But knowing these players, I'm sure they were critical on themselves and frustrated they lost a game by getting away from their game plan. They talk to us all the time about needing to stick to the game plan to be successful.
Losses are always disappointing. Neither team played great, in that both teams missed lots of fairly open jumpers. I don't think Iowa "got away" from what they've been doing, it's just that things look a whole lot different when you shoot 20% from 3-point land instead of 40+%. Iowa's assist to turnover ratio was 9/11, not good. But so much of Iowa's positive assist to turnover ratio is built on guys knocking down open jumpers. Guys like Uhl, Baer, Ellingson, Gesell had lots of open looks. They didn't go in. Iowa still shared the ball and played unselfishly. They just didn't play as well.
Maryland was much better equipped to make things difficult for Iowa than any opponent to date. They could put tall, rangy, athletic guys on Uthoff and Jok and make the rest of the Iowa team beat them. Last night that didn't happen. Woodbury was having a field day inside against Stone and Dodd, but his foul trouble was the biggest factor in Iowa not being able to win the game, other than Uthoff's off night.
I didn't see a team that was playing dramatically different than how they've been playing all year. Last night's team shot 20% from the 3-point arc, most of them were good looks, not rushed. They shoot anywhere near where they've been shooting and they win the game. Uthoff missed all of his first half field goal attempts, coming up short on his fade aways. That's been part of his game all year. He makes some of those, and they win the game. If anything, I don't think he shot enough last night - shooters have got to shoot - that would be my criticism. That's not at all what the title or the column (opinion piece backed by facts) say or suggest.
