Howe: Hawkeyes Exit Spring with Plenty of Ground to Cover

Like most spring games, it's a good-new, bad-news proposition. If one player or unit looks good, it's usually at the expense of a teammate. HN's Rob Howe fills you in on the tally from Friday night's action in Kinnick:

Nice read Rob,defense looked good and offense work in progress.QB's dumping ball off 2-4yrds short of first down because of the pressure put on them.Hopefully they get it figured out or it's going to be hard to come in here and read the post from all of the haters.

Has Iowa ever had a QB with as strong of an arm as N.Stanley? The accuracy isn't there yet but his arm is definitely howitzer-like.

Like a pitcher that throws 100mph but can't get it over the plate.

I like that analogy. Fortunately, plenty of those fireballers on the bump eventually harness that heat and we have to hope NS can do that. We need to remember he's only been less than a year and hasn't been graced with the most accomplished group of receivers.

Not that I can remember. He did have some accurate darts, though. His INT was ill advised, but who knows if most of that was on the receiver.

Or the advantage of a redshirt freshman year.

Doesn't matter how good of an arm Stanley has when his throws aren't even close. I guess I can see why there is a battle at the Qb position. Stanley was the clear # 2 last year, but now it's close apparently. I know it's spring, and our receivers are bad, but my goodness 2 B1G qbs should not look that bad. On the bright side Toren Young looked good.

Why does the name Jake C come to mind when talking about a strong arm with no accuracy? Say it ain't so Joe.

IIRC my Iowa history Gary Snook had to be up there in having a cannon for an arm.

Held most of the passing records before Chuck Long broke them. A guy that gets lost in the shuffle when talking about the top Iowa QBs.

Iowa City native attended City High. Died of throat cancer at 46. Very sad.

No real battle. At this point, Stanley is 1. Mansell 2. Seemed pretty clear.

James Vandenberg had a rocket IIRC.

Regarding Nate Stanley, I just don’t feel confident with him one bit. All the strength in the world but inconsistent accuracy. With that being said, Iowa has some duds at WR AGAIN. I don’t understand how we can’t accidentally recruit a dominate WR for once.
