Howe: Game-By-Game Predictions for Iowa Football '20

I was down near the field near the 50, and on that one, the returner didn't yell peter or point or anything. For some reason, on the next punt, he screamed peter, waved his arms, pointed, etc. and everyone ran away like they were being chased. And there were so many that blamed it on the coaches, like the returners had never been told. Sometimes it has to be on the players.

I hope we get to see a depth chart before week #1, it will be interesting to see if any new faces are making a move up.

Whole thing happened right in front of me.

As soon as Amani Hooker saw the ball on the ground he ran out of bounds over by the pylon. He knew his blocking services would not be required. Beyer saw the ball on the ground and turned his back to it anyway. I posted at the time that for me to do the professional equivalent of what Beyer did I would have to drive a hazmat truck across a crowded warehouse floor at full speed and intentionally crash it into a rack of propane tanks.

It was another chapter in the continuing saga of inventing new ways to lose to Bucky, starting with the 2010 fake punt. The turnover on downs early in the game set the tone, and we lost the actual turnover battle 3-0. Last year it was Stanley not trying to reach across the plane on a potential game tying two point conversion, perhaps forgetting that a fumble does not hurt you in a dead ball situation. In 2017 Jackson has two pick sixes but the offense completely fails to show up.

I think we’ll get one game week if not before. Still positions up for grabs. Interested to see who emerges from the Julius Brents and Riley Moss CB competition to replace Ojemudia.

That was the game where I think we had 77 yards of offense or something similarly horrible. It was the worst performance by an Iowa o-line that I have ever seen. The guards were completely lost against Wisconsin's 3-4 look. They were just rushing 4 most of the game, but it looked like a damned sellout 7 man blitz like 75% of the time.

Iowa was fortunate to win in '15 up in Madison. Not taking anything away from Nate Meier's defensive play, but Wisconsin screwed up there as well.

There are some things in every sport that you get hammered into you from the time you're 4 years old and you just can't be excused for forgetting. In baseball you don't try to catch a guy stealing with a runner on 3B. In football you run away like your ass is on fire as soon as a punt hits the deck. There's no more dangerous place to be on a football field than right next to an oblong ball bouncing around at random, especially when if it touches you you probably just gave the opponent 50 free yards and the ball back. It's just so 101.

In the clip Beyer is at the 22 when the ball hits and he sees it bounce. He continues to run right towards it and block (or whatever you'd call that dance move) even though the ball can't be advanced. And as mentioned before, watch Hooker if you want to see what you're supposed to do. Make a bee-line 180 degrees from the ball. I get that it's a brain fart, but there were like 5 brain farts in a row there and that can't be excused. Those kinds of plays disrupt seasons.

Its up there. Worst I ever saw was the 1989 season opener vs Oregon. First play of the game Scott Davis misses his assignment and Nick Bell gets whacked in the backfield (and suffers a concussion)

We had three new starters on the line that day, two were freshmen. Oregon whipped us something like 43-9 and I didnt visit Kinnick again until 1998. Those offensive linemen would grow up to have solid 1990 and 1991 seasons and Rob Baxley, Davis and Mike Devlin would play in the NFL. Ted Velicer and Matt Purdy grew into solid players as well. But early in 1989 it was like watching boys take on men.

Welp Rondale Moore is back

That Purdue game is starting to look dangerous. Iowa will be rusty and has to replace 2 starters in the secondary now playing in the NFL.

Jeff Brohm could come in with a fresh game plan with offensive plays nobody has seen before. And Jeff Brohm more than anyone, seems to have a talent for finding a weakness in Iowa's secondary.

I really hope Phil Parker and Seth Wallace bring their own brilliant game plan for Iowa's defense, cause otherwise Rondale Moore and company are going to pick that secondary apart.
