Howe Friday 5: Ringing in the New Year with Hawkeye Success

There's a lot to be happy about regarding Iowa athletics right now. As to 2020, I am intrigued by whether Iowa will change its primary blocking scheme next year. I am not in the addition-by-subtraction group, but think someone will emerge as a good QB, aided by the talent returning at WR and RB. Last, don't know the stats offhand, but I think this is already the best WR group that Ferentz has ever had.

I was tracking the receiver stats with those from '11 but lost track. I'll try remembering to go back and do that.

@RobHowe

Any gut feelings on which way Epenesa, Wirfs, Stone and Golston are leaning as far as declaring or coming back? I'm very anxious to find out!

Nothing shocks me anymore but I would be very surprised if Epenesa and Wirfs come back. I think Stone is leaning towards leaving. That's my gut after talking to him about it a few times last month. Golston is coming back.

Good stuff.

I’m most interested to see if we take a look at some grad transfers this offseason. Particularly in the trenches on both sides of the ball. That can be a really good way to add some ready talent to what should be an overall solid roster.

Players I’m keeping my eye on for next year to emerge are Logan Lee, Jestin Jacobs, Julius Brents (pt 2), Justin Britt, and John Waggoner. All fairly highly recruited guys who have some good potential and opportunity. The nice thing is although we are going to lose some defensive studs for the second year in a row, we are still going to return a lot of guys with significant experience.

Thanks.

I think the program is in a good place. KF as some good, hungry young assistants in place.

Will be interesting to see what type of attrition happens this offseason.

Iowa is looking at another punter from Australia. I would expect that position to be fortified in some way.

Yeah replacing AJE I think will be tougher then Wirfs if they both go. Just my 2 cents on it. So if Waggoner or anyone else takes that gig by the horns or if it'll be more of a by committee thing we'll see. Heck maybe AJ pulls a fast one on us all and comes back. It just feels like it's 98% that he and Wirfs go. But it's sure fun to think about em coming back...

Young declared today so I am not sure how that will affect the drafting order and where it would potentially leave AJE to land. Obviously with the hype Young had I would assume he would go ahead of AJ. I don't pay for any of the draft site info so I am not in tune with how many underclassmen are leaving and the who's who of players available. I think with what is leaving already both AJE and Wirfs would have a real good shot at some end of the year awards if they are a goal for them and would want to stay

It’s always fun to play the hypotheticals but after all we’ve lost to the way of the Draft the last few years I just assume they go sadly.

I think Waggoner can be a good player, especially against the run on early downs. If we can get into pass rushing situations we can bring out a guy like Evans. We won’t be able to fully replace AJE, but we will just have to operate differently. Maybe we will blitz a little more. I think we all trust PP to figure it out.

Yeah Young will be the first non Qb taken I bet.. Don't think there'll be much of a debate to that. Wherever the Redskins pick at he won't fall lower then that. AJ will be the #2 DE taken just a matter of who falls in love/has the need for him. But 1st round no doubt about it. Wirfs with a good showing at the underwear Olympic combine could skyrocket up too. I feel like his strength and athleticism hasn't been on display too much for folks. Once GMs/scouts do a deeper dive on him his stock will only rise. He's versatile can play either side of the line tackle of guard. A whole lot to love about him. All reasons why it's just about impossible to realistically think either will come back.
