Howe Column: Plenty Still on Line for Hawkeyes

Good article Rob! I would call not getting routed by Michigan like we did against PSU a win. All we want is to keep it competitive and enjoyable to watch. Show us something!

Thanks for reading.

Let's hope the boys are pissed off and rally this week. We've seen them rise up before in these situations.

That said, Michigan is scary good.

The boys rise up... Hilarious.. They play like they don't give a shit.. No heart, nothing. This will be a beat down like we've never seen. PSU is not that good, and they made us look like a junior high team. Totally outclassed.. Michigan is a totally different animal.

They care. They work too hard not to. It's not a lack of effort.

Penn State isn't that good? They beat Ohio State. I think a lot of teams wish "they were not that good."

They care? Bullshit.. Watch the body language. When sideline reporters are calling out the team for not having any fire, any leaders, any emotion.. That's a problem.. No PSU is not that good.. There was a lot of luck involved in beating OSU as well. They nearly lost to that awesome Minnesota team at home. They work to hard not to.. Give me a break. There isn't squat on the line for this team. KF lost the locker room a long time ago. Maybe we can stay within 50 Saturday night.

This is going to be brutal. Not sure what's worse the lack of talent and athleticism outside of 4-6 guys between the offense and defense or the softness we play with.

I cannot believe anyone can write an article indicating there is a lot to play for. That's pretty much KF'esque on 'now we are going to get serious' when the season is over and the 'we did not see that coming' after a season of major problems starting with the home opener.

In this make believe land I am not sure what is worse... to get blown out to unspeakable levels or come out with the best game plan and effort of the season leaving us to wonder where on earth was that when it mattered?

Penn State has improved since the start of the season with excellent coaching...motivation, creative play calling, etc. to match their talent with their game management.

Iowa has regressed, has quit, and is leaderless...the coach has defaulted....going predictable and safe (boring)...

It isn't that complicated...and it isn't very pretty to watch...like a beaten, retreating, army.

I'm sure the boys are very pissed and want to rise up. I wish they would, as in, revolt against this oppressive combo of pathetic strategy and stagnant scheme that inherently creates obstacles for success and fails to maximize talent and skill. These guys could go play sandlot and have as much success the rest of the year as they will after a week of practice doing the same thing, in the same sequence / situation as they did against Miami, OH. They'd also have a helluva lot more fun.

The quote from Barkley makes me think a lot of the team doesn't really care anymore.

You didn't read the column.

Ohio State has lost 1 regular season game since the start of '13. Penn St. beat it. You can minimize it if you like, but Penn St is a good team right now.

Here's the part of my column you can focus on:

"For some people, the needle already has hit “E.” With ups giving way to downs during his 18-year run, coach Kirk Ferentz has collected more critics than most men in his position. They don’t tolerate slip-ups. Those folks already have decided change is necessary."

Careful Rob. You are about to do battle with the "crazies". They are riled up and looking for blood, and nothing but over the top hysterics are going to satisfy them.

I accounted for folks done with KF and the staff in the column. And that's fine. I'm not going to tell fans how they should feel.

I'm trying to point out that not everybody sees it the way that they do. And many of those people will be there Saturday night, cheering on the Hawkeyes.

The point of the column is to say that the last three games are important for attendance and recruiting moving forward into next year. I'm throwing that out there for the people that don't want to read beyond the headline or are too pissed to pick up on focus of the piece. :)

"Crazies". One of the new slurs for those daring to challenge the establishment

Is that how you view yourself? That is funny as I also "challenge the establishment". What I don't do is tilt at windmills and freak out like KF is actually going to be fired tomorrow.

Speaking of empty seats in Kinnick, if the Hawks do tank this year, do you think the Athletic Department will spring for the $5 coupons (per bulk order, mind you, not per seat) for the concessions at the stadium again, for next year. I can almost taste the nearly-free popcorn.
