Howe: A Closer Look at The '20 Iowa Football Recruiting Class

It's interesting that you chose Yahya Black as a sleeper, as I was going to propose him as well. When you watch his tape, he's got some "quick-twitch" to him, which is something we've lacked at times throughout the last several years.

The other player my gut says could be a sleeper is Ethan Hurkett. Hard to say where he'll end up, but he's got very good movement skills for his size. A lot to work with there.

What's the difference between a recruiting class ranked 25th and in the 40s? Is it volume, only 2 two stars? I'm comparing Iowa's class to Northwesterns (ranked 42nd). Both have 2 four star recruits, Iowa has 2 two stars while NW has none, Iowa has 22 commits versus 17 for Northwestern. What makes Iowa's recruiting class better than Northwesterns?

This is a thumb in the eye for all that think we cant get players to come to Iowa.

Here you go. Recruiting is trending in the right direction. Im hopeful the in game coaching starts trending up as well.

The difference is recruits get high 3 rankings because they are going to Iowa, and low 3 rankings because they chose Northwestern. Of course I'm just kidding, sort of.

More players committed I'd imagine.

But really this all comes down to talent evaluations by the coaches once you get past the blue chip kids that everybody wants. It doesn't really matter if Iowa ranks 25, 35 or 65. 3 years from now we'll now pretty much how good this recruiting class is. Until then, its hopes and dreams.

I'll give KF credit here. His classes usually have a lot more talent than what they given credit for on signing day.

My only complaint about his recruiting is he can't handle diva players. I wish he could be a little better at that.

I cant wait to see these 2 WRs. Im hoping whoever is playing QB has an accurate arrm. Sounds like we are really starting to load up on play makers.

I'm starting to get a little nervous that half our class hasn't sent in their LOI's including some of our best recruits like Yelverton, Hogan, Craig and L. Williams.

Hawkeye Football twitter account has announced Hogan, Yelverton. L. Williams in the last 45 mins or so. I saw elsewhere that the only two that aren’t expected to sign today is Lois and Gulley.

I think the number of players plays into it a bit.

My favorite: Deontae Craig. Pass rushing is such a premium and to get a 4* kid like this is huge. Especially as it looks more and more like Bollers isn’t coming to Iowa City in the 2021 class.

Sleeper: Diante Vines. He could be another skilled WR and potential game breaker. Honorable Mention: Jay Higgins. Think that kid will be a stud at linebacker.

Question for me: I’m surprised we didn’t keep our offer out to Kav’eon Mack. He’s a bigger body WR at 6’3. The two WRs we brought in are 6 foot or shorter. I know we have Desmond Hutson as a redshirt this year who impressed so not super concerned but thought Mack could have been a good fit.

Interested to see if we add one or two in the late cycle. Overall this has been a very good class for Iowa, and 2021 is off to a hot start as well. Hope we can keep this momentum going.

But then why is Cal ranked behind Iowa with 3 more recruits and 1 more 4 star?

I don't understand how they rank these teams.
First you have to understand that not all three stars are equals. Have you seen the offer lists for Yelverton and Lachey? Depending on the service Iowa has like 4 or 5 four stars which includes Hogan, Craig, Jones, Richman, Elsbury. Yelverton and Lachey have to be damn close.

This has been an awesome class by the Iowa staff. They had nearly this entire class filled out pretty early in the game with players they identified early and wanted, i.e their first choice. They then held off late pushes on some of those commits.

I don't deny that, there is obviously more to these players than just star ratings. But rivals seems to be based on numbers. Iowa is now ranked 27th (they've slipped 2 spots) because they have 1571 points, 18 fewer than Maryland and 20 fewer than Purdue who both just past Iowa.

Again each 3 star is not assigned the same number. There are high three stars and low three. It’s a formula that assigns points to each recruit based on their rating I.e a 5.7 rated 3 star is different than a 5.5 rated 3 star.
