How we almost didn’t get Jack Plumb

If I'm not mistaken, that's Megan Gustafson's high school. Any idea if she had any input.

Also, the 151 bridge into Dubuque is not for the faint of heart when the wind is strong. You drive between two bluffs, then out of nowhere you're over Mississippi. The sudden shift from enclosed to wide open can really get wind gusting. It can be especially harrowing during a thunderstorm. I've crossed that bridge at least 10,000 times.

Megan is from Port Wing and played at South Shore High School.

Thanks. I got the port part correct anyway.

Her high school team was staying at same Ashwaubenon hotel that my family was for the 2015 state tournament. Nice family, talked to them briefly in the lobby. They were already wearing Iowa gear and may have briefly mistaken our black and gold Cuba City gear for Iowa. I told them I was an Iowa alum.

Again Megan was very friendly. I believe she played against Barneveld and current Nebraska star Hannah Whitish that weekend (our Cuba girls had played against Hannah in the past, too). I also watched Megan throw shot put and discus at state track where she competed against my son's girlfriend at time.

You know, I read that whole article, and still don't understand how Iowa won him over.

Ok, Iowa did not give up once Wisc mad him an offer, so that was big. But then he just decided he was more suited for Iowa's zone blocking scheme? After growing up in Wisc and rooting for the Badgers? I feel like I am missing something.

I don't know but the road from that part of Wisconsin to Iowa City goes right through Madison.

I wonder how tempted he had to be to cut the trip short around the Fish Hatchery Road exit.

Iowa offered him first and he'd had a good relationship with Oline coach even prior to that visit. But the way he handled it after Plumb told him Wisky offered is what is impressive. And Iowa's turned 'skinnier' TEs in HS into NFL tackles before and that sounded really good to him. Where the timing comes in is if Wisky would have offered him prior to him being on his way to IC for his visit he may not have came is the thing. That pretty much was what totally sealed it for us

If the chronology is correct the Wisconsin staff missed by an hour and a half.

Ninety minutes earlier and he would have been three miles from their campus.

If he gets the call before he crosses the river I bet he turns around. Not to mention his mother wouldn't have been distracted by bad weather and this in a better position to influence his decision.

The smartest decision was not telling Rudolph where he was. He would have had to come back the same way. They would have had 151 staked out from Dubuque to Madison.

If Plumb turns into a pro prospect this story will be retold about a thousand times.

Doyle will turn Plumb into a peach. Same thing we should've done with Matt Nelson--could've been a heck of an OT...now he's a 6'8" nose tackle? Still scratching my head on that one. I called out Iowa for recruiting too many DE's a couple years ago...now we have a surplus. Chauncey Golston at tackle? He has a prototypical DE body.

Most report from the spring game is that Golston is part of the 4 man DE rotation and I believe Brinks and or Reiff has moved up in the interior.

Additionally, anyone remember the Wisconsin guy last year telling us that Iowa only got him because Wisconsin didn't really want him?

Hey yeah that's right! Guess it hurt to bad to tell the truth. Jack was smart stepping over state lines to play!
