How upset do "Minor" legal offenses by players make you?

Obviously, the goal is to have a squeaky clean program (or at least not be Ohio St or Notre Dame). But how upset does a public intox or a similar offense make you?

As a get further from my college years I look back and can't really get upset with a teenager getting a public intox or caught with fake id. They're kids and its college. I'm not saying they shouldn't be punished because it's still wrong, but some of the ridicule seems like it comes from people who never went to college or walked into a bar, for that matter.

DISCLAIMER: I am only referring to minor violations; not DUI's, Assaults, etc. And I am not condoning continued "minor" offenses from a single player.

Right or wrong these kids are held at a higher standard than a typical college student. However, I got into a little mischief myself while in college. I was by most accounts a good kid and at 43 have done well in my life.

Kids are going to get in trouble most of us have from time to time, it is the learning from mistakes and maturing that is important.

I believe most of these "minor" infractions can be avoided if the cops weren't such a$$holes....the athletes, men and women both, are held to a higher standard....I agree, first and foremost, you need to remember that you represent yourself, the University, and your family, so act accordingly when you're out messing around. My son was in IC this past weekend, got an open container ticket ($130), texted me at 2:34 a.m, to say he got this and he deserved the ticket, and apologized for his actions....he knew what was right and what was wrong when he was walking to his buddies house from the keg he was at....I guess I chalk these types of things to growing up, and going through some growing pains, but when you're in the spotlight as these athletes are, shape up or ship out.....jmo

Kids are going to be kids. I do think they need to learn from their mistakes plus I look at Sr. a little different than I do Fr. I also agree IC cops target athlets. Which is so wrong. Don't care what the color they are

Part of college development hopefully is learning how to have fun but stay out of trouble also....have fun, but be smart....drunken behavior beyond the acceptable norms will be punished.....live and learn young people. So,no, much of the minor scrapes that kids get in while at school do not keep me up nites....part of maturation process.

In Josh's case I don't care at all because he is a senior with one minor infraction. He will more than likely make it through the year without getting kicked off the team. With Jok I care because the odds of making it through 3 years of college in Iowa City under zero tolerance are slim to none.

Absolutely zero.

Why are athletes held to a higher standard? Aren't all students representing their school, their family, etc?

There's times I actually expect it from athletes more than the general student body. They've dedicated so much of their pre-teen and adolescent years to their sport, they often miss social learning opportunities that average Johnny experienced growing up.

Then there's that societal perversion, where 30, 40, 50 year old accomplished adults (with jobs, cars, houses, families etc) are fawning over 18 - 22 year football and basketball players to not only entertain them but to also act more maturely and respectfully simply because they've done nothing more -- accomplished nothing more -- than to play a high-profile sport at those adults' alma mater.

I get a lot more upset at how hypocritically pius and condescending adults get toward young men who are making their way down (sometimes stumbling and veering off of) life's path of experiences. Stop being pathetic and give 'em a fvcking break. Their not supposed to be pillars of the community at this point of their lives.

Sarcasm...

It is a little upsetting that I might not see them for a game or two because of something minor. It is a little upsetting that if Jok messes up again with something minor, I might not get to watch him at all. We all need to adhere to a certain standard of living. Standards are more important than being a little upset over something.

Minor legal offenses don't bother me at all. Boys will be boys. It's the really stupid stuff that drives me crazy. Like shop lifting some DVDs or something along those lines.

Absolutely zero.

Yes, to a degree. But I know I wasn't representing my school on ESPN or the BTN two or three times a week, either. The average student is just a number at these universities. Athletes, particularly football and basketball players (and in a few cases, wrestlers) are (by far) the most visible faces of the university. Someone says they just had crab legs with Dr. Eric J. Barron, and we're all scratching our heads wondering who the hell Dr. Eric J. Barron is. Someone says they had crab legs with Jameis Winston, and we know exactly who that is.

Barron is the university president at FSU, for the record.
