How the heck did Iowa pull this off?

I agree with up-tempo. I believe that CJ is a rhythm qb and needs get his uniform dirty. The dirtier his uni is, the better he plays. Also, on the 3 possessions prior to AW's 54 yard home run, Iowa ran a total of 19 plays: 12 pass / 7 run. They passed to set up the run. That is how Iowa's offense improves this season. Up-tempo, also will help pass pro since teams won't be able to sub in 3rd down/nickle-dime packages, and throwing to set up the run. I'd be willing to bet that if we were willing to throw 60+% of the time and run up-tempo, AW and LD will start breaking off long runs.

CJB and the two pre-med majors before him are smart enough to run up-tempo offense. When Vandy did it in 2011 he exploded against Pitt. Then we pretty much didn't see it for the rest of the year. Slow-plodding-predictable offense. That's Cirk's style. :(

I believe Ferentz doesn't like it because it causes there to be more total possessions for both teams and it requires fast, on-the-go thinking and adjusting.

This. Exactly. Dead on.

I believe you're right.

Which explains 4-minute clock management.

One wouldn't more possessions mean opposing defense is tired in fourth quarter for Iowa's smash-mouth football? Is that a bad thing?

Two, it's not like Iowa's up-tempo is going to mean four extra possessions each half.

Kirk knows football is like chess. Kirk likes a chess game that takes a long time. He feels this is his strength. When I was young I played speed-chess in the park. I liked it. It was fun. Kirk would not do well at speed-chess and he knows it. So he's relegated to one kind of chess. Problem with that approach he has limited himself. If a rival coach is good at both chess plays, Kirk is defenseless.

What's perplexing is, if his team gets behind and he tells his QB to just go out and improvise with some up-tempo and win the game; much of the time his QBs are up to the task. Yet after 18 years he still doesn't understand how he can use this type of weapon to his advantage.
