How quickly does this board forget

Last year - start of the year - hammered by Texas, lost to Syracuse in a game we almost came back and won, but were close to getting our doors blown off at points in that game. Got hammered on our home floor by our rival ISU and lost to UNI all before Christmas. The narrative was that there wasn't enough talent to win and that Jok was a bust. Woody continued to regress, MG would never be a good PG in the B1G and Aaron White couldn't hit jump shots. Uthoff was soft and didn't have enough bulk and wasn't aggressive enough. We missed Marble and Fran was going to be on the hot seat. There were posts on here in regards to who do we hire next right before the B1G season got rolling last season.

So, fast forward a year and I see a similar type of feeling from Iowa fans in regards to this season creeping up on this board. The trolls are circling because Iowa hasn't come out looking like the world beaters and I can feel the panic already starting to trickle in.

We've played 2 games this year and people are ready to create the narratives they want to create to sum up an ENTIRE season before its played out.

This team needs time. The new comers, need time. The vets, need time. They are going to be a better team in February then they are in November. Pretty typical for a team bringing on this many new comers. This is a completely different team and the rolls have changed. The defense needs work, it needed work last year at this time. If players aren't playing or red-shirting it doesn't mean they are leaving or will never be able to contribute. I thinki it's a positive sign that we are looking at RS 2 players instead of 1. That means, Fran is comfortable with where we are at.

Fleming isn't a bust just because Brady E looks like he is probably the better option at this point in the season. BE has an entire year in the system. So does Baer. It should be expected that these guys are ahead of some of the new guys at this point of the season.

I think it's good to slow your roll. This team still has the opportunity to be very very good when it matters. I still have high hopes that they will be. Can't wait to see where we stack up with Marquette (a game i predicted that we'd lose on here and got laughed at). I actually like our chances a lot in that game after seeing the team so far...but that's just me.

GO HAWKS - pumped the season is finally here and rolling.

^ ha - yeah, I can get that way a lot too...and I guess this board aint too bad yet (its my twitter feed and other Hawk boards) but I can feel that mo starting to pull that way - and it's easy to forget that last years team didn't exactly fly out of the gates

I saw some negative posts following the exhibition loss but since the start of the regular season I really haven't seen any negative posts.

Not really sure where this is even coming from.

Edit: I was typing this as you posted above.

yeah, I probably need to slow my roll on telling peeps to slow their roll...I'm a pretty big optimist.... but for real, i don't know what people expect sometimes. We aren't rebounding very well early to start the year, which is so strange and no one could have seen that coming considering we lost Aaron White and Gabe Olseni. Our defense is ALWAYS this bad to start the year. We are going to lose some games in the OOC and I can feel knee jerk opinions coming even if they aren't very loud just yet.

Did you not see the Coppin State game? There is absolutely nothing to be negative about after that shalackin.

Well Eastern Kentucky hung 107 on Coppin State.... The Hawks should have scored at least 200. Terrible Fran!!! Terrible. We'll never win another game this year.

That better?

I just can't wait to get this pesky football season over with so there's more basketball talk on here.

Forget what? We knew who was coming back and who was coming in.....I'm excited and even more so after watching Ellingson & others...it's too early to get our panties in a bundle, I, too, am looking forward to the Marquette game, as well, as the res of the season.....we have a lot of great things going on @ Iowa right now

This team will be fine. As soon as the coaching staff fits all the pieces together.

But gird yer loins, (love saying that) the B1G is going to be tougher than it's ever been this season. I would be pleased with a .500 finish in conference.

Last year wasn't the first time I've seen an Iowa team struggle a bit out of the gates, and get much better by the end of the season. I'm sure it won't be the last.

I can't shake the feeling that this year may be an NIT type of season though - gonna miss White & Olaseni, and lots of new faces (inexperience) I think is going to hurt us at times as well, even though we have some seniors playing a lot of minutes. Just not a lot of experienced depth once we go to the bench.

We shall see, though!

When it comes to basketball, I always gird me loins, especially when setting blind, high post picks.

Teams that shoot the 3 a lot have a chance to beat anyone on a given night and lose to anyone on a given night. I have a feeling we will shoot a lot of them this year. Hopefully we win more of those games than we lose.

its just that the jury is still completely out on this team. Without Gabe, Woody is going to have to play a lot of minutes....can he handle that? Without White our rebounding and transition game will suffer...how will Iowa respond to that?

its weird because the hawks are old but also really young. I think 1 junior (plus a JUCO transfer) and 1 sophomore...the rest are either freshman or seniors.

Very true and that's why the post positions are so important. You need skilled bigs that can turn and face the basket and score. Otherwise every night you banking on outside shooting which can be dicy on any given night.

Thus far Iowa has not shown on a consistent basis that explosive fast break that we had last year (mostly due to white) and we also have not looked terribly strong in the post positions defensively (make no mistake Gabe's shot blocking and shot altering will be missed).

Now a guy doesn't have to be huge to be good around the basket he just has to have quick feet. I say that with a couple of successful former Iowa players (Greg Stokes and Ed Horton) in mind. It would be great if someone steps up and brings that type of tenacity to the post position.
