How open do you all think the playbook gets with Indiana and Iowa St to start?

Got thinking about this. This is unusual spot for Ferentz. Sure, the clown game is in fairly typical spot at the beginning of the year....but with also another unusual caveat with ISU carrying a preseason Top 10 ranking. Very possible both schools could be carrying high rankings going into that week if Iowa gets by Indiana and ISU does not stub its toe against little cousin.

Does Ferentz unleash the Kraken to get the job done in Weeks 1 and 2? Or, do we see a more workmen like, tempered approach that may have us splitting those games building towards a Title Run in the West Division?

Personally, I think Ferentz will try to out muscle the Hoosiers and hopefully not have to get into a shoot out with them at home. Then see what Petras can do on the road in the following week if we can't get moving conventionally on the ground.

To me Indiana's win last year against penn st (one of the few IU games I watched a lot of ) was a little bit smoke and mirrors as PSU had about 4 times as much yardage as IU until that last IU winning drive. PSU made a bunch of errors and IU's defense came up with big plays to stop many psu drives from scores.

So if the hawks Oline is in October form on Sept 4th (lot to be asking for) I hope they can control the game with rushing on offense and short passes and not asking a ton from Petras. And if the Dee can be very good then that is a win.

ISU I think we will need to score and move the ball for sure on ISU to keep them in a long field and to get the win. Our Dee has a habit of making ISU running game and supposed top runners not get their yards so let's plan on that happening.

Iowa has rarely been this experienced on offense so the question is, will Brian be allowed to be aggressive on offense or will Iowa settle with trying to out-physical the Hoosers? I think Iowa will attempt to set the tone offensively and then if they do settle into Kirkball. I hope so at least. A lot of 3 and outs by Iowa is the recipe for a Hooser win. I don't see that happening. If the offense is MIA against ISU it's a sure loss.

We all know what this comes down to. Can Iowa stop Penix late in a close game? Indiana down by 4 with 2 minutes left and they have the ball at their own 20.....anybody not seeing a 80 yard game winning drive coming?

The game can't get to that point....plain and simple.

That is a pretty talented back 7 with the potential for some creative blitz packages. If IU has 2 minutes left, I like our odds. If they have 4 minutes and are in 4-down mode the whole way, it gets a lot tougher.

From a X and O standpoint you know way more than I do. That being said, I am not sold. I don't want the ball in Penix's hands late.

It will get opened as far as it needs to to win both games.

I am calling the first Iowa offensive play for one of the games is a flea flicker bomb.

That is a good take, like the first sentence. 2nd sentence I'm guessing your joking. I take it you think Kirk will not hold back anything for these first two games, even if that means putting in schemes he would rather show later in the schedule.

It should be interesting to see Iowa tested right out of the shoot with no cream puff to gorge on to start.

But I like creampuffs.
KF has stated on several occasions Petras knows the playbook and he trusts him. The question would then be, do all the freshmen WR's and other newbies know it? I would hope our OC will do whatever is necessary to win both games.

Super vanilla play book is for OOC games so that we give the rest of the conference little tape to begin to prepare for us.
We don't have that luxury this year. It may not be a flea flicker on the first play, but I expect the offense to come out swinging and to take their shots early.

Ditto.... I'd want a 2 possession lead on them with under 3 mins to go with them having no TOs left before I'd feel somewhat comfortable about it...

I think Kirk knows the end is near and I think he understands that with some of the baggage on Brian getting him hired as HC is gonna be an uphill climb. I actually think Brian is a really good coordinator and am impressed with the way he has worked with what we can get at Iowa (though he left the line in bad shape when he got promoted). The conspiracy theorist in me thinks Kirk is going to give Brian plenty of room to operate this year with an experienced QB and will aim to place a dagger deep in the fanbase this year and next year so that if Kirk decides to hang it up after next season, the fans will clamor for Brian to be HC and to keep Phil Parker on as DC. If we go out there and win early this year and the offense looks good every week save for our annual head scratcher losses to teams like Purdue and Northwestern and we have a 10+ win campaign that can be duplicated next year, each on the back of a great offense, I think Brian could find himself at the top of the shortlist for HC.

Good thing we’re gonna be up by 21 by that point.
Here's to hoping. 3 possession leads are much more preferred. Especially late in the 4th. I can relax when that's the case. But 10-14 pt leads with 3 plus mins left and they have the ball can make me sweat. When you've watched a lot of football and seen some of the crazy shit that's happened in the past....

Look for us to throw a lot mostly short routes and use Goodsen. Not sure how our tackles will hold up and Petras is just not mobile

I'm severely dating myself but I was at this game. Fry's first game as head coach. 1st half--ecstacy. 2nd half--agony. Hail-Mary TD for Indy with 58 seconds left.

Ugh, you had to remind me. That was the first Iowa game I ever attended, my freshman year. But I have to say, it got me hooked and I'm still going back.

I like Tracy and Laporta making great catches and YAC for this team. Goodson and IKM will run the ball well .

If the Dee Tackles are good or very good the hawks will have a very good season
