Was this thread started because we're getting ready to play Nebraska? If so, I don't see them as a "better" team. They've had lots of lopsided defeats since our last one (3 TD's or more).
LOL! 28 losses to those teams is getting pretty damn good at losing. Imagine Iowa's records and KF's overall record if he stopped the trend of dropping games to bad teams.
Ahh, it's always more fun when you get to cherry-pick.
But then, cherry-picking doesn't account for recent losses to those teams, does it? Nor needing to block two field goals against UNI, losing to Western Michigan... need I go on?
Ferentz consistently struggles against, if not outright loses to, bad teams. And yeah, I want Iowa to win every one of these games. Who wouldn't?
Oh, wait, I forgot: many people are quite satisfied with 6-6 and a trip to a Toilet Bowl? Win!
Yeah, but you see, these Kirk bashers don't want to hear about great efforts in a loss. To them, Kirk failed to win a game he should have.
It is pretty clear they are outliers, and as such it makes sense to exclude them. It's not like I threw out bad years in the middle of the decade. Also, we are talking about a solid decade worth of evidence.
And you keep bringing up single incidents of bad Hawk games.
Fine, you get to remove his first three years, then we also get to remove the 3 after that - '02 to '04 - because those are looking like outliers as well.
Except, they're not 'single incidents'. They happen every year, sometimes multiple times a year. Going 6-7 against ISU isn't a 'single incident'. Losing several years in a row to Northwestern isn't a 'single incident'. Losing to Minnesota two years in a row when they're just plain ******* awful isn't a 'single incident'.
I hate this post, but I'll take the bait.
We beat Michigan this year when they were ranked in the Top 20. We were not. Michigan will probably finish in the Top 14 and go to a BCS game. We will not.
That was a huge upset by Iowa and qualifies as "beating a better team"
The only way to judge a coach is to look at his overall record and his bowl record. Ferentz has won 60% of his games in 13 years and is 6-3 in bowl games. The only coach that even compares in Iowa history is Hayden, who won 61% of his games in 20 years and finished 6-7-1 in bowls. Kirk has won a BCS bowl game; Hayden never did. Kirk has won 2 Big Ten titles in 13 years (15.38%); Hayden won 3 in 20 years (15%).
Ferentz is the best coach in Iowa football history. Deal with it.
That was a really long post to be factually incorrect.I haven't gone back through the records but I imagine if you took the 22 cupcake games out of his record that KF is no more than a .500 coach at best.
That was a really long post to be factually incorrect.
Excluding the 20-2 record against non-BCS conference teams (damn you Western Michigan!) Kirk is 74-64.
To those asking about excluding the first two years, he would be 71-46 against BCS conference teams. If you similarly excluded the "best" two years of 02 and 09, he's 54-42 against BCS conference teams.
