How much will it take to sign Pujols and who signs him?

its just not worth it to sign someone that long, for that much money. curt schilling had a great piece on ESPN about how, over the last 10-15 years, no one is worth a 10 year contract. you'll get 4-5 good years, but then stuck paying a ridiculous price for a below average player on the back half.

Agreed - 10 years is a LONG time, and alot can change in that time. Injuries, decline, etc.

On a side note the Cubs would be so dumb to sign Pujols. The Cubs need to shed contracts and bottom out

Good news for Cubs fans is I think Theo will do this

But, knowing how dumb the Cubs are they will probably give Fielder 10 years 400 mil and in year 3 of the deal he will be 600 pounds

He turned down the Cardinals offer in the spring which sources say was 8 years in excess of 200 mil. I would guess that it won't be much more than that from the Cardinals.

So you think someone is going to give him 270-280 mil over 10 years?

The reason I dont think he gets much more than 200-210 mil is who is going to give him a deal longer than 8 years? If anything this season showed he was somewhat human, his numbers were awesome but there was some decline by his standards. I wouldnt be shocked by 7 years 200 mil or 8 years 220 but I have a hard time seeing more than that

Washingon gave Jayson worth 126 over 7 years. Did you see anyone giving him that kind of contract? If you did, you were the only one and really need to buy a powerball ticket.

I'm not saying it's a good idea to give him 10 years, but as history shows it only takes one team.

Also, a team could get creative and give him 200 million over six years which would actually be my strategy if I were a GM of a team that was interested in getting him away from STL. As I said, if it's close he's going to stay there. STL isn't coming close to 33 mil a year though. Their only counteroffer would have to be more years. That's why the most likely team to give Albert 10 years is STL. It's easier for them to swallow 25 mil a year for 10 years than 200 million for 6.

this is why guaranteed contracts in baseball and basketball can be so destructive for a smaller market team. even if a player is worth a 10 year deal (and IMO no one is) you're better served going and getting three good players for the same price.

a good analogy is investing in the stock market. if you don't have huge coin, you're better served investing in several companies than putting all your eggs in one basket. just too much risk if it doesn't pay off.

As a Cubs fan I hope the Cards sign him to a long term deal. He's got a couple good years left so it would just be a lot of wasted money on the back half of the contract.

If Pujols has already turned down 8 years for 200 million then there is no way I want the Cubs to go after this guy. I know Pujols is one of the greatest players to ever play the game but I would not want to invest over $25 million per year on a guy that has already started to fade.

True, the biggest wild card in this whole deal is how dumb some front offices are

The cards shouldve never signed Holliday and then we wouldnt even be having this discussion

I seriously doubt that whether or not the Cubs end up with Pujols is the deciding factor in whether or not the Cubs will stink for the next 5 years.

In fact, I can honestly say I'm really not all that excited about the prospect of the Cubs giving a 32 year old a 6-8+ year deal.

Pujols is a great player, but he was what, 16th in the MLB in OPS this year? Guess the way I see it, the Cubs would be overpaying for yet another player if the give Pujols $30 million a year. I'd rather see the Cubs sign two players for $15 million a year than put all their eggs in one basket.

Besides, given his age, who can say how much longer AP will continue to produce at the same level he has been?

I'm not even talking about if the cubs get Pujols. To be honest, I think they would be worse off if they did. I'm talking about I think the Cards get Pujols. And I really don't think it matters if they do or not. If they don't keep him they will have the money to get some talent elsewhere. If they do keep him, then it would be amazing and good for both parties.

However, no matter what happens, if Prince leaves the Central, the Cards have the best team going forward for the years to come (injuries not withstanding). If wainwright comes back healthy, they will dominate the division next year.

For any team trying to sign a first baseman this off season, their best bet would be with Fielder. He is younger and wouldn't be as big of risk.

As a cubs fan, I want them to sign either of them but at the sametime we need pitching more than anything right now. We could invest the same amount of money per year for Albert or Fielder on multiple pitchers that could contribute these upcoming years. I would like to see the cubs go after CJ Wilson.

Cards fan here. I was told by a friend who is from St Lou that he was ready to Btake the Cards offer in the spring and the players union stepped in and said that he needed to set the bar higher and not to sign. Im a bog fan of his and would love to see him in Card red but they got to many contracts coming up to shell out that kind of money for that long. Besides being 32 is anybody pos that is for sure? He could be 40 for that matter.

I would say ...

I think they make him the highest paid 1st baseman in baseball, and the added revenue from winning the World Series gets the deal done.

After listening to a couple of Epstein interviews I would be surprised if the Cubs went after either Fielder or Pujols. Why bring in Epstein and Hoyer to build this organization if all you are going to do is throw around money in Free Agency? Hendry could have done that just fine.

The problem he has is that there is another 1st baseman (Prince Fielder) who is likely to produce at an equal or greater level going forward. Taking that and the fact that most of the high dollar teams like who they have at first base, into consideration, and I could see him getting less than what he wants. I am betting that he gives St. Louis a hometown discount and takes 6 years, $120M.

That's a pretty hefty discount... AT LEAST 8 years / $28 M per

I've been a Cardinal fan since 1964 and think Albert might be the best player to have played the game. If he is not the best, he is without a doubt in the top five.

With that said there is no way they can give 10 years and 30 million a year. I thought 8 years and $200 million was crazy.
