how many of you tried "controlled substances" in college

I know I'm willing to admit I did, as well as drinking underage.

However if I was a member of the Iowa football team, given the opportunity to go to school for free and represent the black and gold there's no way I would have.

Been there done that...and if I had had even a remote chance of playing for an NCAA championship, B10 championship, Gold Medal, NFL contract, NBA contract, or MLB contract...I wouldn't have done anything that I did in college that was fun.

well since I graduated a couple months after I turned 21, there would have been no drinking in college except for underage drinking

I never tried any drugs, however, I'd say at least half the people I knew in college liked to smoke a little mj, at least occasionally ... one of my roomies had grow lights, etc. and grew a few plants, just to do it, not enough for anything more than personal use

BTW, legalize it, and line up the drinking age with the age of majority!

I'm a current student at Iowa. I don't drink (I've had 3 sips of beer in my life: once at age 7, and twice in the past year, both in laid back settings), NEVER touched drugs, period. It helps that my dad is a (now former) probation officer, and 1. he would kill me for being like a lot of the people he had to deal with, and 2. he's a human lie detector, so he'd have found out.

Perhaps, but that still doesn't take care of the misused prescription pills or the cocaine.

Not in college. By the time I went to college I was an old married guy with a kid. But, in VN, we were pretty much divided into two groups, the alchies, and the druggies. Tried about 2 hits on a joint, decided I would go with the alchies.

VN here being...Vietnam? Because you have to think that would be different from being a college student at home, no?

Agree with the legalization of weed, and lowering the drinking age. But cocaine is a whole other beast.

Yes, I drank underage - but no, did not other substances. Had friends that did it on the down low.

I know it is not on the same level, but I know if I get busted for controlled substances I loose my job and income source (I am a pharmacist). That being said, I know to stay away from the stuff (of course for reasons in addition to me losing my job). That being said, I would have hoped DJK would know that getting busted for drugs would cost him a whole lot of money

agreed!

I am just tired of wasting police resources (read: my tax money) trying to "catch" people smoking weed and college kids drinking

a little from column A & a little from column B. Nothing major. Parents should know and educate the kids. even as strict as you are with them you can never predict the situations they will deal with, nor the stress that could compound the problems.

from experience, the kids with the strictest parents sometimes turn out to be the craziest once they are released into college and now have no one watching them. I am not a parent yet, but I remember about a week before going to college my dad sat me down and said "Son, I guess I have to teach you about drinking beer" As a parent you have to have open and honest discussions, simply saying "don't ever drink and do drugs" simply doesn't teach anyone anything.

I drank in college and dammit if it wasn't fun. That said, I knew to do it in moderation and never got into any trouble. Drugs are a whole 'nother beast. Never touched them.

This is very true. My parents would have been thoroughly disappointed in me if I'd gotten caught drinking in high school, and my dad would have been furious. But that wasn't why I chose not to do it. I just didn't have an interest in it. I preferred to focus on sports, and didn't want to get into any trouble that would keep me from playing. The habit has stuck with me here in Iowa City. It's not that I can't drink and what not, I simply don't want to.

Well, I had smoked weed and tried a few others in high school but now I feel no need to do any drugs and now I focus on fitness and working out 5 days a week. I go to school full time and work almost full time. I'm not really ashamed of it . Made me who I am today. I won't judge people terribly for it if they continue now unless it is the insane drugs like cocaine and meth. Most parents looked down on the kids who were believed to had been using drugs in High School . Most of their "perfect kids" are the biggest drug users I know today from my experience.

With all due respect mrolympia, that is BS.

You act like you would be one way if you weren't a football player but you would be completely different if you were? It is immaturity, in most cases, that leads to this type of behavior. To say you would be more responsible/mature if you played football at Iowa is so bogus. You would be the same person you would have been otherwise, except maybe you would have had a bigger head and been LESS mature than you would have been if you didn't play football at Iowa.

They are college kids, whether they play football or not. They will make mistakes, whether they play football or not. To act like one would not make mistakes or one would be more mature if one played D1 football is ludicrous.

But you aren't alone in your belief. I'm sure many others think the same thing about themselves.

I've always been proud to be drug free lol. Honestly, I just never had the desire plus its a giant waste of money and time. Been offered and around them and always have felt like, really?

Good for you. I'm sure that choice is not always so easy with so many around you glorifying it. I have friends well into their 40's now whom have never had a drink. They don't feel ad and they were always still the life of the party when younger. Your father is proud I'm sure. I always felt and still do, that beer is my drug of choice, I can still have full control over myself, and I know my limitations.

Then again, you are always on here or must be watching and analyzing games, so you're staying busy.
