How many at-large spots are open right now?

Maybe overall because Lon has been in the game longer. But I'd be willing to say Hoiberg has gotten to a better start than Lon did.

Took Lon the 4th year an Pan American. Other than that the guy is incredible. Proven winner. Can't stay anywhere though. Put that up against Fred any day.

One of only 5 coaches to take 4 different teams to NCAA's.

Oh, I know their RPI won't be great but there are enough other variables in play to offset an RPI of say 55-60...IMO. I'm talking conference rep/rating, beating MN and IL and finishing ahead of them in the standings due to those wins, etc. All of my posts on this subject assume Iowa goes 10-8 and finishes 6th. There are no posts by me stating that a 9-9 Iowa team is making the tournament. They would have to win the BTT...or at least make the finals giving them 2 more quality wins late IMO.

Iowa's RPI actually got worse after they beat Northwestern. If they win every game but Indiana it will go up quite a bit but I don't see it getting to the 50's. Only two wins (Minnesota and Illinois) would significantly help it and it's a pretty big IF to finish the season 6-1 so let's not get carried away here...

Did you not read what I just posted? I said overall, yes he has a better track record because he's been coaching longer. Who knows what the future will hold....

Yep, Lon's been there and done that. Fred might be able to say the same in 20 years but definitely not in the same conversation at this point in time.

RPI always matters and will always be one of the main things the committee looks at...go to any site and RPI is a HUGE factor...just happens when you're 92nd in RPI its "not that big of a deal anymore"

First, you are replying to a Cyclone fan so I don't think he has that opinion because Iowa is 92.

And I think you misunderstood. He is right, RPI doesn't matter, RIGHT NOW. It isn't and was never intended to be an ongoing rating system used throughout the season. It is an end-of-season metric, and isn't predictive like Sagarin or KenPom.

ILhawk, I've seen differing opinions on RPI, more have been that RPI doesn't matter at this point in the season, and to wait till the end. So why use that in your argument saying that OU is a lock?

RPI does matter and it matters a lot. That's better than the good old boy system. About Fred v Lon, Kruger is a class act and has done it over and over again. Fred has done well, but no tenure yet. Kruger just doesn't mess things up at the college level. He's starting the stretch run higher than ISU and he has an easier schedule that won't hurt them. No way a top 35 team from B12 doesn't get in. They won't be lower than 35. Lon's teams finish strong and not fade. He's taken 4 teams to NCAA's and two to the final 8 and 1 to the final 4. This while taking over down programs and not staying a very long time.

Here are some random thoughts.

I think the Big 12 gets 5 as OP said...which 5 will change weekly between ISU, OU and Baylor.

If Iowa finishes 6th in the conference which almost certainly means sweeping Minnesota and Illinois in those 2 games then Iowa likely does make it. We will have just beaten both of those 2 teams and finished ahead of them in the conference...because we just beat them. Facts are facts.

I have seen North Carolina play a few times this year. They aren't very good. They will probably make it on their name but I don't think they are a lock. The ACC only got 3 bids in the not too distant past so it could happen.

Looking at the teams vying for the 7 spots per this thread's theme...I don't see 5 teams that are better than the 3 Big Ten teams on that list.

There needs to be more posts like this where the op is considered fact and people base their opinions off of it. Slight variations are fine like saying you think there will be 8 spots instead of 7 but it sucks when people just pick the whole thing apart.

Good job Windsor and good job op.

Great OP and some very good contributions. For Iowa it boils down to 2 of 3 wins against Minny, IL and IU and no other losses.
