How important is the Rose Bowl?

How important is the Rose Bowl to you? It has a lot of tradition but in this day and age with the BCS does the Rose Bowl really matter much to you? Does winning the Rose Bowl or playing in it matter to recruits? How important nationally do you think the Rose Bowl is?

The Rose Bowl gives the teams a lot of exposure. Which matters for recruiting, especially if you win. Nationally it is probably less important now with the BCS system and the possibility of a playoff system.
For me I would first like to see the Hawks get to Indy.

You just have no idea. The Rose Bowl is far and away the best bowl experience. The Parade itself is an international event. There isn't another bowl setting that comes close to the Rose Bowl for game day experience, and all the other planned events are just top notch.

It is just hypothetical for most Iowa fans because probably many of you were not born since the last time Iowa was in a Rose Bowl. But for bowl experience, it is in a league by itself.

That being said, since the BCS started, the national relevance has definitely eroded. It will be interesting to see what happens in 2014.

It will also be interesting to see what happens if Oregon, ND, and Bama all run the table this year. If that happens, Oregon will probably end up playing a 2 or 3 loss B1G team that might not even be ranked in the top ten in the Rose Bowl.

If the Rose Bowl doesn't matter anymore then college football no longer matters. Let's be honest, the extents that some programs will go to for the sake of winning a national championship will ruin the sport. It is obvious that over-signing is impacting college football. You can read about scholarships being pulled after one year to free up spots. While all the buzz is about qualifying for the BCS there is still something special about winning a conference championship in my book.

I never want to go back to a time period like the 60' and 70's. It was a time where about 15 teams dominated college football and the gap in talent was immense leading to blowout scores. I think we are beginning to realize that some programs are emerging that will take the actions to improve their chances of qualifying for the BCS year after year.

matters to me a good bit....even more when you realize only Minnesota and Indiana have longer Rose Bowl droughts than us at the moment.......and Wisky's been to what, five of them since our last trip??

In that scenario what SEC team do you predict to pass ND to play Alabama in the NC?

Many of us? It was 22 years ago. I think over 90% of the people on this board are over 22 years old.

The Rose is still quite important. It's a heavily exposed game on New Years day, the destination is great, and it usually matches two marque teams. And I think it matters more for B1G teams than it does for Pac-12 teams.

I am 99.99999999999% certain Iowa will not win a national title in my lifetime, but I hold out hope that one day we will win the Rose Bowl and I think winning that would be the true high water mark for our program. Unfortunately, I think with the conference realignment our odds are not good, as we will have to be better than Michigan and Nebraska and then beat OSU or a very good Wisconsin team (or maybe PSU if they are able to come back after the sanctions) just to get there, and then we'll have to beat a very good Pac 12 team. Under the old regime where you might be able to sneak in 6-2 or 7-1, our odds were a lot better, but I think that conference title game is going to be a disaster for us. Maybe I'm just jaded, but in my lifetime, Iowa always loses one big game per year and to win the Rose Bowl, we would probably have to win three in a row (Nebraska (unless we have a 2 game lead on them and have sufficient tiebreakers against everyone else in our Division), Conference Title Game and Rose Bowl). It's just not that realistic.

I know ok4p is doing his usual trolling but he brings up a couple of good points. The conference title game makes it a challenge, in the old days you could sneak in with even a 2 loss season and back in the day the tie breaker used to be whoever had not been to the Rose Bowl for the longest time.

But it is funny, since Iowa has already knocked off MSU and Ohio State/Penn State ineligible Iowa has a real good opportunity to get there this season. This is as bad as I have seen the B1G in quite some time and anything can happen. Granted which ever team makes it will get blown out but losing to a Pac12 school beats getting embarrassed by a Mac school or ConfUSA.

Rose Bowl has the 2nd best TV rating after the BCS Title game, so it must matter to a lot of people.

Oh, so you think my opinion that it will take nothing short of a miracle for Iowa to win three big games in a row is trolling? Name the last time we did it? How often do you think we can 7-1 or 6-2 (leaving us with a better/equal record with Michigan and Nebraska) AND beat the best of OSU/Wisky/PSU in a neutral site game AND beat the Pac 12 champion? It's seriously like a once in 50 year event, if ever. Even our best team in the past 20 years (the 2002 team) would have needed to beat OSU and let's assume they did, then they get to the traditional Rose Bowl and play USC - oh how would that have worked out? Our other really good teams in the past 30 years (the 2009 and 1985 teams) both lost to OSU. We did beat Michigan and Nebraska in 1981, but we didn't play OSU and we still lost the Rose Bowl. Hell, maybe it's actually a once per 100 year event.

Don't disagree with this at all. I hadn't thought about the winning three big ones in a row like that.

No, I agree with your opinion but the fact you are expressing these opinions pretending to be a Hawk fan is trolling.

How IMPORTANT is the ORSE BOWL??? Are you NUTS!?!?!? As was well stated earlier, Iowa will NEVER win the national Tin Cup... But WINNING the Rose Bowl is OUR version of the brass ring. Its as good as it gets for Iowa Football... The Rose Bowl IS still THE most visible Bowl Game in the nation!
