How does Woodbury do against Zeller??

Zeller will have his way with Woody or Gabe....but that is what Iowa is going to have to risk,as they cannot leave Hull and co. on the perimeter...they will shoot Iowa outta the gym. I suspect Fran will switch defenses often, with both zone and man,but they must stick with Hull either way.

Zeller could be the first pick in next June's NBA draft. Indiana puts so much pressure on your defense with the way Zeller runs the floor, their first look is to the 5 for a fastbreak layup similar to MSU, Woody and Gabe better hustle back on D or it will be a long day for the Hawkeyes.

Woodbury has been paying attention to how Indiana plays see article below:

7-foot Woodbury to take new role as center against Indiana | Hawk Central

This comment sticks out to me most, Iowa needs to have good shot selection and not force anything:
“Without a doubt our whole team needs to get back,” Woodbury said. “Zeller isn’t the only one that runs. They’re running everybody. So getting back on defense and getting our transition set up is a big key to the game.”

Woodbury is very solid and can develop but right now zeller is on another level. If woody can stay out of foul trouble and know how and when to help and not get pulled too far from the hoop and somewhat slow zeller's running then we should see a win for iowa. I am hoping he can he can at least stay out of foul trouble and play about 23 min then we will really have a punchers chance in the game.

If Adam can stay out of foul trouble, and I think that will be one of Indiana's main objectives, I think he can play with Zeller, who might not be able to stop Adam offensively. If hs is in foul trouble Mel and Gabe are capable of playing him well in spurts as they did last year at Carver.....

I really think Adam will do well......

One of our main objectives will be to get Zeller in foul trouble and spend a lot of time on the bench......

:)

The Zeller/Woodbury match-up is going to go like this: Zeller will pick up at least two cheap fouls because Woodbury gets one or two of these a game, they will not be missed against IU. The good thing about Zeller is that he doesn't really truly post up a ton. He runs the baseline a lot and finds the open space when dribble penetration is created.

This does bode well for Woodbury a little bit, at least. I can see Woodbury getting in and staying in foul trouble in this one by helping off of Zeller and picking up fouls on the recovery back to Zeller. Woodbury will be fine if he doesn't help off of Zeller, it allows Zeller to be at his best, moving without the ball. Zeller rebounds so well because he reads the ball from the shooter so well while in motion and can find empty space to get position.

I am not sure that Woodbury/Zeller is really the match-up we need to focus on, it may be whoever is trying to guard him if and when he is left alone when players help off of him. Like I said, he really doesn't post up all that much, it is just what Indiana does, not that he isn't capable of it because when he does, he goes to the line. All last year my wife and I debated why Crean didn't post him up and let him work, he is a good passer out of a double. Maybe Crean thinks the dribble penetration creates all the space he needs to be effective, however, when teams put a man on him and play physical and do not leave him on dribble penetration Zeller can be ineffective.

From the few games I have watched Indiana...keeping Oladipo in check is more concerning than how well Woodbury matches up against Zeller...I really believe Oladipo is the guy that makes the wheels turn for the Hoosiers.

And not to mention as someone else said...keeping Hulls in check is going to be important as well.

If it becomes Woodbury vs Zeller...that's not good for Iowa...

I personally don't think we can contend with IU, and I think the first 7 games of Big Ten are going to be ugly...but we're making progress overall.

Who knows how any of the freshmen are going to react to facing...you know, talent.

Honest question I was thinking about earlier this morning. Who is the toughest big man Iowa has had to face so far? VT, WSU, and ISU didn't really have tough big men to provide a challenge or prepare us for IU.

Maybe toughest big men faced were McDermott and Echnique(sp?) in the very important scrimmage with Creighton earlier this year. By most accounts, they played well and learned how tough it was going to be down low.

AW might be the best match up CZ has seen to this point this year. I wouldnt be surprised if Fran keeps A W in for the most minutes he's seen all year. I would think AW plays 30 minutes, 6 pts, 8 rebounds, and most importantly fouling out. CZ is held to 12 pts, and because of the battle in the paint, an off shooting day for Indiana equals an Iowa win.

Im not saying that doulble teaming CZ with 2 Zach McCabe type beefcakes hasn't been tried against Zeller yet this year, but when was the last time Zeller was guarded one on one with someone who is his physical attribute equal?

Is anyone else having trouble getting over the "two McCabe type beefcakes" thing?

I'm gonna go ahead and not count that.

Fran wont put Woodbury in that position. Sure there will be times when the 2 are isolated, but Im assuming Fran will run more than a few guys at Zeller.

^^Agree with this^^

Among Woody, Gabe, May and McCabe, there are 20 fouls to give towards "defending" Zeller. Iowa will make him work hard for his points.

My question is why isn't this a poll?

1. Dominates and leaves for the NBA after this year, becomes the next greatest b-ball player ever.

2. Shows his age and experience level and makes some mistakes but learns from it.

3. Gets dominated and quits basketball and becomes a plastix salesman with Scorp.

I just can't imagine there are any other options of what might happen.

This is where it gets real. I am excited to see Woody go up against Big Ten level competition. He may and probably will struggle at first but by the end of the regular season he will be a much better player having played against some of the best players in the country. If you want to be the best you have to play the best. This is where boys become men and warriors are developed. Watching him grow overall is going to be fun. There may be some painful moments but he has the gifts, talents, and abilities to be a top player in one of the toughest conferences in all of college basketball and the best part is that he is a HAWKEYE. GO WOODY!!!!!

Zeller is not going to be the #1 pick. He is huge, but he's not very athletic and is not overly physical for his size. That being said, Woodbury has no chance, he's about the goofiest thing I've seen on a basketball court. Not saying he can't be better, but you're getting too excited because of his size. Zeller worst match-up was against Butler when the guy just got physical with Zeller and took him out of his game. At this point, Woodbury does not possess this, from what I've seen.

I don't know if Woodbury is the goofiest thing I have seen on the court...Iowa has had some other big guys that looked a little goofy their first couple years.

I don't even think he looks goofy though, when he is indecisive he looks lost, but not goofy.

The teams that have controlled Zeller do not leave him ever and try to be as physical as possible. Woodbury can't be that physical as he has a tendency to foul when he does, but if Iowa doesn't leave him alone and let him roam free they will be okay.
