How does this look to Lickliter?

I know some will try to be bravado and claim Lickliter's been mailing it in and not earning his salary but I don't for a minute believe that.

Lickliter has been giving us his best. Whether that has been good enough is another story. But if you're Lickliter, how do you feel after a day like this?

Coaches need to have thick skin. It comes with the territory of being a D1 coach. But today's happenings are (or at least) feel different. Today a fan base stopped holding back. The floodgates were opened with the smallest rumor and the rest is history...

What do you do if you’re Lickliter? You can't possibly feel appreciated or wanted after this.

In a way I really feel for him. He's a nice guy, stood up for what he believed in and has maintained integrity and values every step of the way.

I am one that doesn't think he should remain coach for next year, but I don't think he deserved what happened today, either.
 
I've had wanteed to ask Lickliter off the record what he thought about the fan base.
Lord knows Iowa fans haven't treated their last 4 coaches worth a crap.
With Iowa City being a fishbowl, it can take it's toll. I do understand that some of the things said about Lickliter are warranted. He did just get done coaching one of the worst seasons in Iowa BB history, so there's going to be some repercussions. But still, Iowa fans are pretty polarized as a whole.

I was in the student section when they entire arena was chanting "Fire Bowlsby" during Mr. Davis's last game at CHA. Steve Alford was also treated like a God in Iowa City until the Pierce situation ran away from him. If Pierce hadn't gotten in trouble or if he had never come to Iowa, Alford is still on the sidelines today, and that is fact.

You want to explain to me how Iowa City is more of a fishbowl than Lawrence, KS? Norman, OK? Fayetville, AR? Columbus OH? Bloomington IN?

I think all Iowa fans feel bad that this snowballed today, but at the end of the day he made his bed. He has to sleep in it.
 
He signed up for this type of pressure. There is always the chance that this could happen in big time athletics. If he wanted to play it safe he would have stayed at Butler. Can't say you wish this upon him but can't say I am sorry for him either.
 
I am sure Lickliter has bigger fish to fry than worrying what the message board fans think about him. I am so what of a message board pariah myself, and it never bothers me. I hope he is expending energy working on rebounding next year than how to get Skeeter in Clear Lake back on his side.

One of the most fascinating things about these message boards is the fact that it makes some fans think that just because people can read their opinions, that they acctually matter. The people in charge are in charge because they are smart and know their business. They do their jobs, and they don't put much thought into what you or I (but mostly you) have to say about it.
 
But Ghost, it's not just message board users. The rumors out today weren't started by message board users. This is much higher than message board banter and hearsay.

Marty Tirrell reported Lickliter leaving as a fact on his show. Things were out of control today. I knew it would be an interesting day when i woke up and it didnt disappoint. The only thing that wouldve made it even crazier wouldve been an Iowa victory

It's a game of telephone Spank. The message gets repeated so many times by people who don't know what they are talking about, no one knows what the real message is.

You say the rumors weren't started by message board posters. How the hell can anyone know that? Whatever was or wasn't said has been lost, and whoever said it is unknown. When it go "out there" people were either too obsessed with their hatred for the coach, or too obsessed with their desire to be first, that the truth fell by the wayside.

And what do we end up with? Nothing has changed since yesterday.

And nothing will change tomorrow.

Is your distaste for me (and the truth) so powerful, that you are acctually going to defend KJCC and their Facebook reporting?

Is it because you are excited they are teaming up with KGAN to bring better weather coverage to Eastern Iowa?

Nope. You're just an ***, and your game is tired.

I've never defended KCJJ's reporting - just noted that it took this story to a different level - past internet message board fodder.

Very true. If he expected to be the coach before today, I can't imagine one reason why he would want to remain the coach after today.

Because he isn't a 12 year old girl?

I think he can take it. If he cares what anyone on the internet says about him, I will be very disapointed.

Having an entire fan base bash you and want you out is pretty tough to take, especially when you can't guarantee them any more success than they've already seen in 3 years. I know message boards don't speak for EVERY fan, but you have to admit, there's a little more heat to this rumor than most.

Just because I rumor gets spread further doesn't make it closer to being true. People seem to get confused about that.
 
My first year out of college I made 20K and worked in a ridiculously hostile environment....the type of situation where co-workers shouting at each other was commonplace. I survived just fine.

These coaches know that thick skin is a must for their positions. He's making millions of dollars. I'm guessing Todd will be just fine either way. I doubt he's too concerned about fan mutiny.

WRONG ... I hate Alford, and it has absolutely nothing to do with PP ... and I know my non-HN Hawk friends feel the same way ... no connection
