How did the 1997 team go 7-5?

Agreed. I was at the Northwestern game....cold, miserable, windy, snowing...Iowa missed 2 or 3 FGs that day. Awful.

Iowa Historical Scores

Strange season....411 points scored with five losses. Ouch.

I was there also. I have never seen a short fg that was heading straight thru the uprights almost do a 90 degree turn like the one that we kicked at the end of that game...like the hand of god reached down and deflected it and cost Iowa yet another win that day.

One constant since 1995 for Iowa football is when they go to NW,and the weather is bad(and it usually has been),they will lead for much of the game only to be caught by NW in the end. If it is a nice, sunny day, Iowa will romp..often by 30+ points, but for some reason,we almost always have had bad weather, and it has cost Iowa wins. Last year, same deal.

Ohio State- Iowa got out coached. Fry basically said we are going to give the ball to Banks, try and stop us. Their Frosh LB did. We missed Banks on a route, and Dwight had a deep ball just past his fingers. Could have been a win.

Sam Sword cost us the Michgian game and helped them win the NC. Dwight had a second half KO return that was going to the house. Sword got finger on him (litereally), and it was just enough to force TD out around the 18. A sack later and a missed FG (not sure they were even able to attempt one) led to an 82 yard kick return that lead to 0 points. If TD scores there, Iowa wins.

I was at the NW game, it sucked. That's about all I remember.

Sun Bowl, TD was our only threat in the pass game, and he could not separate from the ASU DB's. We lacked a second and third WR that whole year. I think that, and average LB's kept that team from being epic.

For anyone that paid attention to the talent on the team, and more specifically the next couple of years afterward. That 1997 team's talent was very top heavy. After you got past the studs, the rest of the team was very very average...as the next few years and lack of success would confirm

See the 2010 team...that's the blueprint that the 1997 team followed as well. Plus, Sherman was NOT a good quarterback. He was good in high school, but that's about it.

Got a chuckle from your post. As mentioned, my brother and I were there in 97...mid 30's in age at the time, snoot-full of peach schnopps and even in our youth and anti-freeze....we kept running out of our seats to get warm.

And agree 100% on your weather comment. As mentioned, I was there in 97 (horrible weather-1-point loss), sat through the rain/wind in 05 (1-point loss), and last year (rainy/windy 4-point loss). In fact, the only time I've seen Iowa win @ NW was 1985, on a glorious October day when Long went for 6 TDs and Iowa romped.

Completely different teams. Both disappointing, but for different reasons.

1997's squad had a few great players, but wasn't anywhere near the type of team 2010's was. You think there is any way the 2011 squad finishes 3-8 after losing some studs to the NFL?

There was no excuse that Dwight didn't touch the ball 20 times a game. The guy was a touchdown waiting to happen every time he touched the ball. They should have used him more in the backfield and got him the ball.

Could you imagine Dwight in today's wide open spread offenses? If he played for a team like Oregon he'd win the Heisman no doubt

I can imagine what Dwight would be in an offense today. He would play for Florida and his last name would be Harvin. His team would win two national titles in his three years in college.

My memory is starting come back now after 4 games Tavian Banks was leading the nation in rushing so Katzenmoyer was assigned to shadow Banks everywhere. Tavian's strength was not running between the tackles and Katzemoyer met Tavian at the hole play after play after play. Half of his tackles were solos on Banks.

I'm still ****** at the offensive pass interference not called on Michigan's WR on their 2nd TD(first possession of the 2nd half I believe). To this day, it's the most obvious PI call I have ever seen, and it was done right in front of an official. The Michigan WR actually used both hands to push the Hawk corner out of the way and just simply turned around and caught the ball. It was so bad that the push off happened right at the goal line and the Hawkeye defender ended up out of the back of the endzone.

Yeah, I remember this too. Not sure what down it was, but their offense had been stifled the whole first half by our D and an offensive PI call there puts them in goal to go from the ~20. No way to describe the severity of it other than to say I don't remember any bad/no calls from beyond last year other than this and the entirety of a certain 1-1-2006 bowl game.
