How did CJ let this happen?

Kirk sold CJ and for some reason this poor kid bought it again. Since I can see whats going to happen before most of you kirkfans can let me tell you how this is going to go.

Kirk is already preparing for this Kinnick sized dumpster fire. It started with the depth chart. Then the pointless presser. Now Kirk has done a little dance with the coaches. What happens next....well the usual but this time he has a QB that he doesn't mind throwing under the bus. In fact kirk has already thrown CJ under the bus and now will enjoy it.

Now before you kirkcrazies get your undies in a bunch lets not forget that kirk loves to hold a grudge. I don't think we have seen Kirk get backed into a corner quite like CJ and his dad did to him.

So what was CJ sold on?

You will be is goat for this next failure of a year. He and his "running game coordinator" do not have the brain power to showcase CJs skills, nor does kirk want to. Its not kirks style and after that radio interview its like you stole his bubbleyum. Now Iowa has a coached that is mad at his QB, the media, and the fan base. This should make for a heck of a season.

I think you are onto something. CJ must be a complete and total fool..........

or

Maybe, just maybe, there could be another explanation........

No, it couldn't be.

Well maybe it could be, I just don't know.

I mean I'm sure I'm going to look like a kirkcrazies even bringing this up, but maybe, just maybe as kirkcrazy as it sound, and I know it is super duper impossible to believe.....but could it be that CJ likes playing football for Iowa????

Oh man, now it just sounds soooooo stupid once it came out of my mouth, I take it back. We all know that there is nothing to like about Iowa football!!!

I think he won the starting job...and once you win the starting job at Iowa, it's VERY tough to lose it. See: Jake C, and Jake R

Maybe he realized that if he couldn't easily beat out a QB like Rudock, he is probably going to have an extremely difficult time playing at other schools in the Power 5. Despite having a head coach he doesn't like his gunslinging style, Iowa is CJ's best chance to play because his competition is very weak.

Not sure I buy into the Kirk feeling pressure and making a decision theory. Kirk has always shown an indifference to fans and players when they think he should be making decisions they support. Unless it came from Barta and I'm sure it didn't then it could be one of two things. Kirk wants to go out with his legacy intact or like what the op suggested that Kirk is playing us. The more I think about it I'm not sure which one it is. One thing I can predict is C.J. and Jake will both start games next fall.

So you think it was kirks choice and he made that choice without any pressure?

Yes.

LOL if you think KF is gonna make a decision base on anyone "pressuring" him. For proof of this, who exactly did KF just promote to OC of the running game?

Watching the tape of the Nebraska game and seeing JR throwing the game away with his fumble & interception (and previous play near-interception) inside Debbie's 10 might have been enough to legitimately change the ol' ball coach's mind about JR. Especially since JR returning may not be 100% since I've heard he will graduate in May.

We shall see.

See, I just don't buy the "Nebraska game" reason for playing CJ in the bowl game. How could JR be so entrenched at QB, yet one half game from being replaced due to his performance? How could CJ be so far behind all season long, only to become the better choice after one half of the last game of the season? It doesn't add up. What does add up is that kfootball realized, on his own or with help doesn't matter, that he orchestrated a season that came within one game of being a fan revolt, next season in attendance. kfootball conceded CJ to the fans. But lets not forget, fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. CJ could still transfer after spring ball. CJ should know how to read the tea leaves, this time around. And yes, CJ is the better player, in my opinion.

I predict Iowa's QB will do a whole lot of handing off in 2015. So much more handing off than in the 2014 season. Which ever QB is willing to do that will play. That is Kirk's preference and why the 'running game coordinator position' was created (and manned by his son). Also to offset some of GD's preferences and, at least, show who's boss on offense.

I don't think CJ was "so far behind all season long", I believe they truly were close. But that doesn't mean "split the snaps 50/50" in KF/GD mindset, which is to ride the #1 until convinced someone else should be #1.

That's consistent with how it played out with Christensen/Stanzi. KF didn't "concede CJ to the fans" anymore than with Stanzi, he is just extremely resistant to change and Nebraska gave him the final push.

We can disagree on whether this is a concession or not, it's speculation, either way. But what does it say about a coach that takes an entire season before coming to the conclusion that a change was needed? And yet, there is still 7 months and 2 camps before the actual starter is named for game 1.

It says that KF made a mistake with who he played at QB.

I'm not sure why many on here say just how freaking stubborn KF is, but then in the next breathe think he is caving to pressure, or making a concession when he does make a change. You do realize both can't be true.....either he is so stubborn that he rarely changes, or he is making a change just to make fans happy. Me, I'm consistent, and I realize that KF is stubborn, and there is no way, not a chance in the word that he named CJ starter other than he FINALLY realizes he made a mistake. He won't say he made a mistake sticking with JR (once again because he is stubborn), but he has finally admitted/realized it. I would almost bet that JR has as much a chance of starting/playing as CJ did last year. KF has moved on, and made his decision, and we all know that once he does that, he rarely changes his mind (last year is the prime example of this).

I think we can't have it both ways: If KF is too stubborn to change, which is a charge consistently made on this board, and if he ignores opinions from others, which is another charge consistently made on this board, then how can we say he bent to pressure on replace JR with CJ? Logic escapes me.

I think KF simply saw that his long commitment to JR needed to be seriously re-evaluated and the only way to do that was to elevate CJ to the starter position. Next, we will all have to see how it goes. I, for one, hope that CJ is successful in elevating the offense for Iowa next fall. I assume that is what everyone on this board who is a Hawk fan would endorse...right?

Huck, there are no absolutes with anything or anyone. With the discord leading to the bowl game and a lack of tickets sold, either kfootball or Barta got the message. The lack of ticket sales will always generate change. Always.

Regarding stubbornness and change, an example is that kfootball is now one of the most consistent coaches at going for it on 4th and short, which changed after the fans went ballistic after the punt from the kNU 38 yard line. kfootball is stubborn, but not deaf. His stubbornness can cause needed change to take too long, but it has come, in small amounts.

Because it is absolutely possible for both to be true of the same person regarding any topic. The horrible tickets sales to the bowl game was the fans voice, wouldn't you agree?

You and I are in agreement...I even gave you a thumbs up and I am a very tough audience!

I've been to multiple bowl games, including the most recent one in Jacksonville.
Trust me, it was a big message to see the lack of black and gold in Jacksonville, when Iowa has had a reputation of being a great traveling fan base.

The horrible ticket sales got Todd Lickliter fired.
If Kinnick averages less than 60K/game, that's more than $4 million in lost ticket revenue.
