How bad is DJK on a scale of 1-10?

1 is driving 1 mph over the speed limit and 10 is Dahmer on my crime scale. I would say he is about a 3.5, maybe up to a 4, and everybody who is "shocked," "disgusted" or "upset" is overreacting just a bit. I'll bet he pleads guilty to some lesser included charges and gets a week or two in the slammer, treatment and a ton of community service. He's not really hurting anybody but himself and if he has a serious addiction to coke or prescription pills, he needs treatment and not a long jail sentence or outrage from the fan base.

Regardless of whether I agree or not, your posts are usually amusing. Good work.

I would say a 5 or 6, not necessarily because of the severity of the crime, but because he is one of the faces of the team and a senior who is supposed to make sound decisions. Had this of happened to a freshman I would rate it a 3.

I'm guessing his family, friends, teammates, and coaches would disagree with that.

Well said. My thoughts exactly.

I think it really depends on what the charges are. And I think those leaving it in the 2-4 range may be missing the boat. The weed, sure, pretty common in college. However, was in possession of coke, and 6 prescription drugs. It all depends on if there is a charge of intent to distribute, if there is, then this is a much more serious issue. And for jail time? It also depends on the amount of coke seized, and also if there is evidence of distribution. Obviously there is some evidence of distribution within the house, but its not certain if it was DJK or others involved. I think the explanation of $3k in his bedroom would be interesting to overhear.
I think most of you are assuming that it will just be possession of narcotics, and under the influence. In that case their may not be jail time. And it is also true that he may plead down to a lesser charge, but this is a serious offence. Also, those that said this is less then a DUI, I am going to assume that was a joke. Possession of illegally obtained prescription drugs or Coke depending on the amounts can be a felony. You need three DUI's for a felony.

I guess my shock and disbelief is that this guy I watched on Senior Day and have the reaction to the fans, the moment, etc, was also someone doing coke and smoking pot.

I have no idea how long or often he has done those things. I doubt it just started this week...and he was first team All Big Ten with this in the background.

It's just hard to believe.

It's one thing to have a little fun from time to time. But letting a guy move into and deal from your home is just real dumb. When you're that close to that type of activity, your bound to get in trouble eventually.

At this point, it seems like things are a bit overblown. I doubt DJK gets any time...probably some fines and a lot of community service. His NFL draft stock likely will take a hit but he'll still get a shot to play and make a team.

This was a mistake, no doubt, and is very disappointing to Hawkeye fans. And I feel bad for his family. But DJK will recover from this.

Do remember, this was a kid who worked hard, performed well, and up until this point, kept himself out of trouble. All people make mistakes and its too bad that DJK got off track. Unfortunately, the consequences include Iowa fans likely not seeing DJK in an Iowa uniform again and DJK tarnishing his legacy at Iowa to a certain degree. It stinks that DJK is going to miss the Insight Bowl but it would've been a lot worse if Iowa had the type of season everyone had hoped for and Iowa was playing in a BCS bowl.

Best of luck to DJK. I hope he can get this cleared up and get his life straightened out.

The $3k can simply be explained as a gift from a secret booster of the Iowa football program, so that's easy to get rid of. DJK wasn't charged with selling or anything like that, it was his roommate who was doing that. As for why I say it's around 3.5, I think it is A LOT less detrimental to society than the scumbags who drive around with a BAC above .14 or so. Those people kill and maim innocent people. A guy who may or may not have a serious addiction but isn't out shoplifting and stuff to get his fix isn't that big of a problem - that's not to say if the guy played in the League for 4 years and the addiction got worse he couldn't turn into a guy doing really bad things, but on its face, I don't think in the realm of the things people do wrong in this society, it isn't very bad.

so all of you that think it is not such a big deal---you do drugs/drink to excess yourself?

Not always, but I'm well aware that there are murders, rapes, abuse, assaults, etc. every day that can totally destroy lives in a way that possession and drug use can't.

Drug addiction can really hurt alot of people. But as long as you are still a living drug addict at least you are still alive.
