Horrible awareness at the end

On Iowa's final drive I was saying to my wife that if Iowa scored a TD they should go for 2. A 4 point lead means nothing, but a 6 point lead means you at least have a shot at blocking the extra point.

Wadley breaks off a long run and Iowa lines up for an extra point. I was yelling at the tv...and then Iowa takes a timeout because they realized the situation...finally.

That timeout was Iowa's final one, and they could have used it prior to that last play once Penn State lined up and Iowa saw what formation they were in. Their players could have gotten some much needed extra rest. Does Hooker jump an extra half inch to block the pass if he had a little extra rest?

Obviously we'll never know what could have been, but it was absolutely terrible awareness to have to use that timeout on the extra point. Coaches are paid to think ahead and forecast every possible situation, and they failed there and it cost them a crucial timeout. If I notice something after 8 beers, its kind of BS that the coaches didn't notice it.
 
It is painful how we can lose big games sometimes with the little things that add up at the end.

Barkley's first down runs of getting 7-8 yards at a time were just killers. Sadly, those could just have as easily 2-3 yard losses with better fundamental tackling.

IMO, none of this would of mattered if Brian trusted Nate to throw instead running into 8/9 man fronts for so long. Having a shot at 1st down passes is better than no gain runs over & over.
 
Totally agree with the situation going for two after the TD. But fundamentals weren't going to help the Hawks defense against Barkley today. The dude is 230 lbs,, cuts like a guy 30 lbs less, runs a 4.4, and is also incredibly strong. He's bigger, faster, and stronger than most college LB's. The physics of Barkley make him tough to contain. Iowa defenders on multiple occasions were in the right place at the right time against conventional RB's, but not against Barkley. He defies a certain level of fundamentals.
 
I just don't get with playing at home that we wasted a time out on the go for two. A no-brainer. The one that really bothers though me the is the lack of a challenge on Barkley downing his knee on his big fourth quarter run. He was clearly down and of course the review wasn't called for by the officials. I remember yelling "challenge", and then Penn State runs a play. With the number of grad assistants, coaches, managers, ect, - who is responsible for telling Kirk to challenge a play? They need to be fired.

This was huge. We couldnt see it from our place in the stands but we could here the other fans yelling for a time out. I dont know but there is a communication at Iowa's bench and coaching. I see other teams easily know they need to take a timeout or challenge.

I've been wondering if that's a trusting of Nate thing or just his being stubburn. I'm with you PSUs LBs (Herbsteit pointed it out even) were just firing off to wherever Wadleys first step was. I thought we did a terrible job of running plays for TEs. Having them block for a quick count and then go run a route would have been an effective play all game but I don't think they ever ran such a thing...
