Hoops Forecast: Basabe & McCabe Projections

And those teams have nothing at all to do with the 2012-2013 Iowa team. This team needs a big guy. Who is going to get all the minutes at the 5 if Woodbury plays less than 18 MPG?

The team needed a big man THIS year, yet Fran used (for the most part) McCabe/Basabe over Brom/Arch/Olaseni.

I think Fran will start with the same White/Basabe/McCabe rotation at the 4/5 at the start of the season with Woody getting worked into the rotation. Hopefully by conference play Woody will be starting, taking nearly the same path as White.

I know the team needed a big man this year and it's unfortunate that McCabe and Basabe had to log major minutes at the 5 spot this year, as they were Fran's best options for that spot. Woodbury was not an option this year so I'm not sure what the point of your first comment was.

I think Woodbury starts right away. I'm not hoping for a lot of offensive production from him this year. Him being in there gives us a lineup where everybody is playing their natural position and a legit interior presence on the defensive end. That is huge IMO.

Olaseni played in 18 of 35 games, 90 minutes total....out of 35 total games, that's an average of 2.5 minutes per game. Brommer played in 30 games 237 minutes. 237 divided by 35 is 6.8.

So if Brommer and Archie averaged 6.8 mpg, and Woodbury is coming in and expects to average 18 mpg or thereabouts, that's around 11 minutes less per game for the rest of the bigs to fight over than were up for grabs last season. Then factor in a few minutes per game for Meyer assuming he doesn't redshirt. Add to that the fact that White's minutes were deceptive because he started the season at the end of the bench and became a clear-cut starter, and it's even less for Basabe and McCabe to work with. I just don't see Basabe and McCabe's roles increasing unless somebody gets hurt or transfers. The only way I see either of their minutes increasing is at each other's expense.

earlier jon took the under when someone said they were expecting 18 min out of woodbury. i think he was looking at much lower than 18...could be wrong but jon can say what he thinks on that.

I can't imagine he's thinking Woodbury and Meyer will combine for less minutes than Brommer and Archie did though, which is the only way I can see McCabe and Basabe getting more minutes than last year.

i dont believe he or i mentioned meyer in the thoughts. plus i believe jon feels that white and maybe zach will get a few minutes at the 3 spot to give marble a rest opening up minutes for woody and meyer while still keeping white and mccabe at decent mpg.

That said, he needs to develop a 'go to' move in the paint with his back to the basket. He's not really a strong jump shooter and I don't know that he ever will be. He's a jumping jack who can fill the running lanes and score opportunity buckets for you in transition or off misses. In Iowa's offense, he needs to be more like the gazelle than the galoot.

True, if Baasbe can mature mentally and learn to be more consistent with his effort he could really help the team. He is a decent shot blocker, very athletic, and is capable of running the floor and getting early fastbreak baskets against bigger and slower defenders. He is undersized for a power forward but if he can improve his post up game, he could really help the team next season!

I think McCabe can get four or five more minutes per game, same with Basabe. I think they can get their increases in that time.

I'd actually like to see Iowa run more zone defense in the half court set too, so they can use those three on the court together more often.

Jon, I'd love to see these numbers from Basabe and McCabe next year. However, with Woodbury, White, Basabe, and McCabe getting their primary minutes at 4-5 plus Meyer and Olaseni picking up spot minutes as well, I'm just not seeing how the minutes shake out for them to get those numbers. If Basabe and McCabe average 25 as suggested and White averages 25-30, even if White spends half his time at the 3, it leaves only 15-20 minutes for Woodbury, Meyer, and Olaseni to split between them. Is that what you're figuring will happen?

Ok, Iowa has White/McCabe/Basabe as proven entities at the 4/5 spots right now, what they needed last season was a big man that can defend and alter shots.
Right now, the only player I see doing that is Woodbury, I have not seen Meyer play to date. So that it 4 players for the 4/5 spot and unless Meyer/Olaseni can prove they are going to garner any real playing time, redshirt them and balance the scholarships.
Lost in all of this is I am not so sure that the bigs are going to really impact Iowa's season as much as the guards that are coming in. Iowa is adding a very intelligent Gesell and very athletic Clemmons/Ingram. How much does Marble improve next season? Does Oglesby have a breakout, my answer is yes.
The only position that Iowa is going to have to have a freshman really step up is at the PG spot and they have two of them along with Marble, if needed.
Unless Iowa gets in some foul trouble, which McCabe/Basabe has been prone too, I don't see Fran going more than 4 players at the 4/5 positions.
