HN Podcast with Miller & Deace: Taxslayer, Ferentz & Barta Future

Jon,

If Ferentz were to step down today, do you have any faith in the current Iowa admin that they would hire the right replacement?

Or are we at the point where change is needed so desperately that we are willing to take that chance?

Personally I would love to see Deace's suggestion that Barta man up be implemented. Because if whoever is on Barta's shortlist is not viable or obtainable, I don't want to relive the 1999 Bowlsby-Stopps fiasco - although I guess that did work out for about 10+ years .

The entire university if messed up on the admin side. Problem really starts with Sally Mason who is incompetent at best. Nobody wants to do anything because there is a chance they make a mistake and they don't want to lose their very cushy job and big salary. Do nothing and put your head in the sand and keep cashing checks. Kirk learns this by looking around him.

Attendance in Jacksonville - I was at the 1997 Sun Bowl and at the Taxslayer Bowl.
There were more fans in El Paso in 1997 than what I saw in Jacksonville.
Keep in mind, that Iowa was just in El Paso in 1995.
El Paso is a 24 hour drive from Iowa City, and Jacksonville is a better city than El Paso.

The comparisons between 1997 and 2014 can't be ignored.
The 1997 team had more dominant wins, unlike this team.

There has to be changes in the coaching staff, or we will see a 3-win season in 2015.

If Ferentz is back next year, I am fine with a 3 win season. It would mean we are at the point of resolution. If he comes back and we win another 6-7 games (including a loss to Iowa St) then this could go on for the next several years.

This is exactly why Jon's #1 option to replace the Offensive Coordinator is what needs to be done. Otherwise this ship will keep sinking. And we will be looking at years like 2014 (a 4-8 team in "normal" B1G years), thru at least 2020. That's a couple more down years with Kirk, then a new HC. Basically, losing-to-mediocre teams for the next 5+ years. Unfortunately...

Our best option, would be to have someone take over the OC job who wants to be a head coach in a couple of years. Someone who will be here and done in 2-3 years. Someone with fire, who can also recruit... Someone who will demand, in writing, complete autonomy with the player personnel, AND the play calling. It can be done. Are you listening Gary Barta?

Money talks. Use Kirk's bonus of $529k, if he has any self respect, he would use it. That plus the $250k or so we are paying now for the OC, and you WILL get a good OC to come to Iowa.... In an earlier post, I mentioned Scott Frost, Lincoln Riley & Doug Meachum as examples. They all have experience, and they all turned their current team's offenses into diamonds in 1-2 years... There are several young ones out there available. Iowa has the player personnel on the roster - now to build a very good offense for next year. SELL IT.

On Iowa!

The problem is no successful young coordinator is coming to Iowa under KF. They would be foolish to do so. There is no denying KF is on the final laps of his career at Iowa. Whether his career ends this year, next or in a few years, it's certainly to that point. These coaches arent going to sign up and coach somewhere when the HC could be done in a few years. That's why Jerry Montgomery left Michigan under Brady Hoke, JM could see the writing on the wall. Either he took the job offer from Stoops or he could be out of a job in a year. Iowa is pretty much stuck until KF retires.

Job security will not be an issue, if we hire the right person. They will get another job, that is if they do not leave on their own terms.

The key is getting Ferentz to agree to let the OC make the calls. And it has to be in writing... Otherwise, you are right, and it won't happen.

Enjoyed Deace's thoughts on the stance that Barta could take to make this workout for Ferentz as well as himself..........PSU example, comp structure for new asst's, acting soon on a short list for upcoming coaches conf, etc. It would represent a significant move away from experience and loyalty that Ferentz values so much with his key staff members but it is another possibility among options that have been sited and Barta would have to exercise leverage over Ferentz which might be doubtful. It does put the program above all else which is where it should be and probably offers the most hope going forward for fans. With little change or no change in the off season I believe the decline will continue. Something more structural needs to happen. How much more evidence do we need?

Excellent overall podcast..........thanks.

Iowa doesn't need an OC who has already proven to be successful as an OC at the D1 level. Why would anyone with that background come to Iowa? If they're successful, they are probably already coordinating an offense that is better than Iowa's. What Iowa needs at OC is the exact opposite of what they have now. Somebody young who is looking for an opportunity to prove themselves as an OC. If fans are clamoring for an OC with an impressive resume, then they should just be happy with Greg Davis because his resume was about as good as it gets.

I also enjoyed the thoughts on Barta. Unfortunately GB is just an empty suit. He will do whatever KF wants him to do.

Best F&%^$#^% podcast ever!!! Only thing that I do NOT like is allowing KF to be the one to go out and make changes.....or letting BARTA help him choose the guys. That buys both of them two (2) more years. And do we really want a coach around that just had his hand forced to make wholesale changes??? If you think KF is surly now, wait until that happens!!!

I say we have t-shirts made reading "Deace nutz" with a finger pointing downward in response to the middle finger Hawk fans have been getting for 5 years.

A few points. It's true GD doesn't have the same offensive philosophy as KF but is that such a dismissible offense? Some posters point to a lack of consistency on offense. What the **** does that even mean or matter? CONSISTENCY? Yes, GD and KF butt heads on offense. Look at it this way: Iowa's offense, this season, has called the most pass plays and has the most pass plays, ever, <checkdowns don't count> in the KF era AND the 2014 season had the 4th best yards per game and the 7th most points per game in the KF era.

Iowa's offense of 2014 could've raced the ball down the field for either a TD or FG to beat Wisconsin in 2010. Iowa's 2010 offense under KOK and Stanzi would never have been able to execute a two minute drill.

My realization: KF wants to keep pounding on their DL until the yards come and GD thinks there are other, better and easier ways of gaining the yardage. Iowa's OL really wasn't that good this season... GD didn't give the OL time (until the 4th QTR maybe? never?) to pound open the holes...and why a fullback is needed in the Iowa running game..to provide his own blocking while running the ball. So KF may never change or game plan but GD does. The OL can't open holes so there's more passing. Unlike the 2013 season where GD's Iowa offense ran the ball a lot. I can't remember how often the OL opened holes in the 2013 season.

Another point: KF will never change. NEVER. One thing he never does is game plan. He thinks he has the formulas for success that he and the Iowa coaches implement before the first practice.
You say KF let two QBs play in the TaxSlayer Bowl even after he had chosen his game manager's QB? I say KF must've had an ulterior motive. Like keeping GD. Like keeping CJ.
