HN: Iowa Running Back Analysis

History is stacked against Canzeri making it through two years at Iowa let alone playing meaningful minutes as a true FR.

LOL. You have a very short memory. Very recent history (09 & 10) suggest that a freshmen will certainly see the field this year (in fact, they almost have to, unless you are a big believer in Jason White).

Further, to those commenting that Johnson has skills, again, I don't doubt that in the least, I've just seen too many Iowa players with the injury bug that never realized their full potential in this program to start buying into Johnson before ever seeing him stay healthy for a full season.

A #2 RB will emerge this year, I like McCall, Canzeri, & Johnson, and I'm very confident all three will see the field this fall.

Canzeri is good at taking advantage when the defender is off balance and he gets to full speed quickly once he's found the hole. BW didn't seem to do alot of juking or stop and go when I saw him play. He was more of run to a spot where a hole is supposed to be and blow through so fast no one could catch up.

I cant see it. Not any amount of real time anyway. I have said this before, Covert was in camp here when he was a kid, then got switched to the D and now is FB, then you have Johnson, and we are still hoping for Rodgers (right?), there are other options for back there that know the blocking schemes better than anyone thats just walking on. Like I said if it comes down to real play time for most of them, we are hurting and it will not be a good season. Yes I think they will want some of them to get some play time, but in no way are they ready to step right in to any serious roles.

I have a very hard time seeing Canzeri get any PT this season. His highlight tape is amazing, and he's electric w/ the ball in his hands...however, he's definitely undersized, and I just don't see him getting significant minutes, if any.

I definitely think Johnson and White figure into the rotation, w/ Coker the obvious #1. I think Johnson and White definitely get the first chance to showcase their talents for the #2 spot. I recall White getting 1 carry last season, and he burst through the hole quickly, picking up I think ~10-15 yds. I'm not saying he'll definitely be the #2, but he looked light years better than when we were down to the #5 RB a few yrs ago, at least comparing walk-on RBs.

Staying healthy is the key for our rb corp. If they do, I am very comfortable with a rotation of Coker,Johnson,McCall with Rogers at FB. That would be a dynamite running back group.
When you add in our receiving corp of McNutt,Davis,KMM,Shumpert,Cotton and Stagg, then the TE's of Herman,CJ and Derby...if Vandy can come thru, this group of skill players could be very good. Just stay healthy, with a good o-line,and you got a potential blockbuster offense.

I really like Coker- talent and character-wise.
Johnson- just stay healthy and he will be explosive.
McCall- great combo potential...big and fast.
