Hire James Ferentz

Obviously I don’t hide the fact that I’m not a Brain Ferentz fan.

But with Polasek out, this is the ultimate chance to get the Ferentz brother on the staff who would do a ridiculously good job as OL coach. If any of you have ever seen or heard an interview with James, you know he’s the exact, 180° opposite of Brian. Extremely humble, very articulate, and he doesn’t have the “coach speak” bullshit that Brain got from his dad and cranked up to ten.

He’s got several years under Belichick, lots of game experience, and the added bonus of several years away from Iowa to gain perspective on football beyond what goes on in IC.

This is the Ferentz brother that should be in Brians spot eventually and who knows from there....

Here’s a fairly recent interview, and another from a recent SN media day where they Pats’ Scarnecchia also has nothing but good things to say. Check out anything on YouTube talking to the guy and he’s definitely not the type you think who would go ape shit in a press box embarrassing himself and the team.

Get it done, Kirk.

If KF wants to go this route, I don't have an issue with it. KF has more than earned the right to choose his staff. There are lots of examples of father son coaching trees. James was an excellent lineman in college and had a stint in the pros, and certainly has the resume to land a D1 position coaching gig.

The best coaches under KF have been excellent teachers of their position. Polasek didn't strike me as that. James sounds like he could be.

Not a bad choice.......unproven on the recruiting side but if he has the personality and communication skills it could work. He seems to check most of the other boxes. AJ Blazek might have been another hat in the ring had Vanderbilt not announced his hiring in the last 24 hours.

Wonder if J Ferentz might be a better face for recruiting efforts within Iowa as well. Need to keep the upper hand within the state especially with ISU gaining some momentum with their program. The recent ISU recruit's (Imming) comments about his experience with Iowa's recruiting have to be of some concern.

Wouldn't be surprised to see some shifts in responsibilities within the current and future staff. Staff losses can also present opportunities to reexamine things. Seemed to work well with recent additions..........Polasek, Copeland, Foster, and Wallace.

Sounds like a good choice but very incestuous. I remember when Brian was hired there was some kind of rule about hiring family where they had to look the other way to get it done.

And, don't forget Recruiting Coordinator, Tyler Barnes, is KF's son in law.

You remember wrong.

The only difference is that he reports to Barta in an official capacity but there's zero that they "had to look the other way" about. And that's coming from a guy who doesn't like BF at all.

Family members working together happens all over, not the least of which is college sports staffs. Steve Ferentz was a grad assistant for a season as well.

So the hell what? lol

Moriah Marinelli is the director of wrestling operations and she's married to a current wrestler. Kaleb Young Is married to Tom Brands' daughter.

There are NCAA rules in place for family members, and there's no "looking the other way" going on, unless by looking the other way you mean, "following the rules."

Are you suggesting Barnes shouldn't be the recruiting coordinator? Looking at our rankings trend I'd say he knows what the hell he's doing.

He may very well be a great option and better for the program than his older brother. But, I wonder if he is ready to give up his NFL career yet.

Would not be a bad hire, IMO. I wonder though if KF would want him to have some outside experience before taking a gig at Iowa? Brian did. Always a good idea in a family business.

I think when Brian F was hired some people squawked about the process maybe being too fast without looking at more candidates and the number of candidates interviewed. Maybe there are some state rules with nepotism as far as scrutiny and being qualified. Brian is qualified with his football knowledge but his demeanor may be another thing.

That'd make for some interesting Thanksgiving conversations.... Sorry Brian I'm demoting you and you can be your little brothers assistant or take a hike. haha.

I wonder if the players are as torn on how they like BF as some fans are. Most that speak out seem to have his back and like him as a coach. There's been the same guys that accused Doyle of all that stuff that put BF in that same boat and don't like him but how many others without an ax to grind do too?...

Yeah I don’t think it’d ever happen but I think he’d be a good one to have on staff.

Ideally to me, BF takes a HC job somewhere else and James would be a candidate. But wishful thinking + $0.50 won’t even get you a cup of coffee.

Sounds like a possible strong hire but I wonder whether the crap erupting today from Chris Doyle’s hire by the Jags would in any way splatter on the Ferentz family and the addition of yet another member to the Iowa coaching tree. Let us not forget Kirk and Brian were both at the top of the program but allegedly not aware of what was going on. (Make of that what you will...)

KF may have no choice other than to pursue racial equity in his next hires.

I saw that Dochterman put out that Mike Devlin may be a name to keep an eye on. He was an all B1G OL for Iowa in the early 90s and has spent the last 16 years coaching in the NFL. He was just let go by the Texans

There's about as much nepotism in coaching as there is in Hollywood. With the Vikings, Gary Kubiak retires and his son takes over as OC. The list is mighty long if one thinks about it. The Ferentz clan is not starting any trends in that regard.

I'd like to see KF hire someone who is the same boat as he was when Hayden Fry hired him. A very young coach who wasn't expecting to be interviewed, much less offered the job, is an excellent teacher, grateful, loyal and KF could kind of groom him exactly how he wants in technique, philosophy, etc. History has a way of repeating itself.
