Hillyer getting open plus when T Smith is back

I know CJ missed him on one target on the deep post pattern but from the stands Hillyer was pretty open a few other times. This is good to see. Not faulting CJ for the overthrow or not throwing to Hillyer more as CJ was under pressure most of the game.

I am saying that Hillyer is running good routes, J SMith had a breakout game, and when T SMith comes back and with Vandy playing well the WR corp looks better for the last half of the season.

Also, in the 4th qtr #20 Andrew Stone showed really good speed to get wide open steaking down the west sideline. Not only are the routes and the receivers showing more promise I think if CJ can be given the time he will find and hit the right guy.

CJ's percentage was down a bit from normal but looking at live action and replays there were a couple times he had to throw behind receivers to avoid a defender (which to me shows how amazingly fast CJs visual processing is).

Go hawks and go passing game to go along with the running game.

If we could pass block as well as we run block then we will have a chance to be real good.

Teams are blitzing the hawk line and CJ a lot. I think other teams know our Off Line can block a front 4 at an above avg rate and CJ would pick them apart so they blitz.

Now he hawk line has two back up tackles playing for new first team tackles. I think the screen passes, draws and shovel passes will have to be in the playbook to slow down the blitz.

Some tricky pass patterns like the one that got Kittle wide open on the first TD are great.

The Hawks need to keep either a back or a TE in to help with pass blocking. Yes it means one less receiver in the patterns, but as said if given time CJB will find the open receiver.

Couldn't agree more, other teams are going to keep blitzing us until we show that were able to pick it up.

When T. Smith is healthy, I hope both Smiths are on the field at the same time. Will blow pass defenses away! And open up a lot of Iowa receivers and runners.

^^ Exactly, with both Smiths split out wide the opponent safeties and coaches have to really worry about the deep ball and even an out or stop pattern where the Smiths can break it for big yardage. Then you can even have two TEs with the speed of Duzey Kittle and Coble with a lot of green grass in the middle of the field.

Canzeri is an above avg to excellent blocker picking up blitzes or he can go out of the backfield for a quick safety pass .

Wouldnt you want to keep the play action pass game going most of the time with CJ under center?

I agree, but we need to find a way to get a cleaner pocket for CJ. Just hasn't had a lot of time to find receivers.

It is sad that it takes an injury for Kirk to get the right guys on the field... Speaking ofthe right players, I heard a rumor that we offered Willies the chance to come back. Any truth to that?

If I remember correctly Iowa did give him a chance, but he didn't agree to whatever conditions Kirk gave him to return.

The right players? Last year everyone was complaining about Vandeberg getting reps. Is it possible that the right players are out there? There was the same talk with Willies, though I did see him make some plays I also saw him out there lost on many plays. It's great to have talent, but if you have someone that you know will perform on every play vs. someone that may run in the wrong direction. Well, maybe I'm just conservative like Ferentz.

The O-line is beat to hell. If Iowa can get a guy back for next week it will make all the difference in the world. I don't know how well we'll do with the line so thin.

Ask any offensive lineman; it's easier to run block than to pass block. When run blocking you go find someone to hit, usually the guy right on your hat. But pass blocking, you have to give ground and figure out what to do. When the defense stunts and blitzes things change, and it's much harder to account for those changes.

So now we're criticizing KF for what exactly? Jerminic Smith has played in every game this year. He was backing up T. Smith. The only way J. Smith could have played more would prior to T. Smith's injury was if Iowa played 4 WR formation as a staple of the offense. Should we just ditch the TE and go with 4 WR all the time? Or are you saying he should have been playing instead of Hilyer or Vandeberg?

I'm happy the staff recognized J. Smith's talent, decided not to redshirt him and then he was ready to produce in a game yesterday when needed.

Whiners gonna Whine. Grousers gonna grouse.

No, not all the time. Both Smiths need not be on the field at the same time all the time. We don't usually have 2 TEs in every pay pass play either. We did have a few 5 wide on pass plays in the Pitt game.

I don't see why Iowa needs 2 possession receivers in at the same time...Meerkat and Hillyer.

Really, we had at least 2 possession receivers in on every pass play last year with another of KF's favorite offensive starters KMM...should I mention KF's propensity to play the bruising, slow fullback/halfback that is lights out on pass protection and can take a beating as most important to KF's offense? QB, fullback/halfback, possession receiver as most used wide receiver - all were KF choices for offense. Never would have seen Canzeri unless everyone else was hurt. Who is going to start at running back once L. Daniels is healthy? Why was L. Daniels chosen as starter in the first place? IMO, KF should lend his interests to things he has expertise.

Would be great to get T. Smith back this week. Both Smith's on the field and it will be suicidal for defenses to load the box.
