Hillyer and Vandy need to be the starters this Saturday

I rewatched the game and Jerminic is not ready for prime time. He may be awesome in the future, I certainly hope so, but right now I would rather have Kittle or Duzey line up at WR. He's just a few months outa high school and there's no shame in saying the step up in competition is too daunting right now. Losing Smith and he-who-shall-not-be-named really puts a limit on the WR corps this year. I remember 2004 when we had no RBs. If Iowa overcomes with the lack of depth at the WR position I will be the first to call for a raise and extension.

Let's give him another week of practice with the 1s and more time to develop chemistry with CJ. The coaches have constantly been praising him. I would not have said this some seasons during KF's tenure, but right, now, whoever the coaching staff puts out there, I trust that it's the best move for the team.

I agree, I don't think that he saw either of those deep balls and didn't even put his hands up....I thought at least one could be caught....although it would have been tough.

Really hope Duzey is ready - the TE's could be huge in the short to mid range passing game - much lilke we saw against ILL State.

Not sure when T. Smith got injured last week, but I'm assuming a combination of him getting a full week of practice + not facing a defense nearly as good as Wisconsin's will help the freshman.

So, you rewatched the game? It appears you didn't. Smith beat DB's multiple times down the field. CJ just missed on a couple throws. Some of it probably had to do with the windy conditions, but you realize Smith probably hasn't worked with the ones much, if at all, before last week. Timing is important. They will connect on that deep ball this Saturday.

Along with all the reps he got with the 1's against Ill St and UNT. :p

Seriously, though, J. Smith needs to be on the field because he has speed to take the top off and keep men out of the box. Hillyer doesn't bring that. I can recall couple of times J.S. was open, deep, and one time when he was double covered deep, and he was still open. CJ missed him.

dang, Colfax, I should have read this entire thread before I replied with my post immediately below yours. I think not getting J.S. reps with CJ against Ill St and UNT (particularly if kfootball wanted J.S. to be T. Smiths backup at that position) was a huge lost opportunity. Hopefully, he and CJ find themselves in sync, now.

Yeah, Hillyer doesn't have the speed he has the size and speed of McNutt. Throw it to him so his height or big body allows him to catch the ball. That's usually not a long route. Gotta have a speed guy - J. Smith - to clear out other defenders.

I agree but not sure it really matters who starts at WR because they rotate so much. The top 4-5 will all get their chances Saturday. Even though Hillyer may not be able to stretch the field as much as our quicker guys he has good hands and is a fairly effective run blocker because of his size.

It would be good to see Duzey get some reps at TE if he is ready to go.

Hillyer got deep enough against Wisky to draw that PI penalty. Hillyer and Vandy are both good. Rotate in J Smith and I hope he can do the quick stop and comeback patterns that T Smith can to get open.

T Smith is great on all kinds of routes and clutch. Vandy has been clutch.

I dont think Illinois's dbacks will be as good as Pitt and Wisky.

Imagine how good J. Smith is....I mean we have been told time and time and time again over the last year that KF won't play the best players. I mean is this new KF, or is J. smith going to be the most awesomest WR ever at Iowa since he can jump Hillyer and other WR that have been in the program longer.

I think J. Smith is playing to prevent an opponent putting 8 or more men in the box on every down.
Now, the old KF wouldn't have cared if there were 8 men in the box. Does the new KF care or has he just given those responsibilities to someone else?

Exactly. Greg Davis needs someone who's going to stretch the field. At the very least present that threat. Otherwise Iowa will be playing in a phone booth which is like watching them run in sand. Like a poster said Smith had his guy beat multiple times but Beathard couldn't drop it in there. Also when you notice how many times Beathard targeted Smith, it's obvious he's confident in Smith as a receiver. Jeriminic is a guy who we've heard about for a while now and there's a reason for that. Bottom line is Iowa has to present a deep threat to be productive offensively. Hopefully with a game under his belt on the road, he got those jitters out and coming back to Kinnick should help as well.

I'm all about giving J. Smith an opportunity. I think he showed a couple times last week he could get open and Hillyer is serviceable... I'm not really concerned about him losing snaps.
