Highlights & Observations: Joe Wieskamp v. Connor & Patrick McCaffery

Glad to see that some people are coming around. I will start in order of recruiting year.

Connor:
He maneuvers the court beautifully and really has a great sense of where and when to go. He also has a good and explosive first step. I think he will contribute the first year he gets playing time. I still expect a redshirt year. Simply to space out the guard classes and to give Patrick and Connor and extra year to play together.

Wieskamp:
This kid is the legit business. His overall game is just as developed as any Iowa prepster in God only knows how many years. Injuries are really the only thing that cold hold this kid back from being an all time great.

Patrick:
Patty Mac didn't get to show us a whole lot and probably will continue to be a supporting role to Connor for the remainder of this year. Next year we will really see Patty flourish as his team will retool around Patrick. I will hold my full evaluation of Patrick until I see him as the main option for his team. As of now though I still think he is a program changer.

Connor and Patrick McCaffery got the best of fellow Hawkeye recruit Joe Wieskamp in Thursday's substate final. Here are some thoughts and highlights from Cedar Rapids:

Hey Rob, I was at the game last night too and came away very impressed with Connor. He made Wieskamp earn everything and is a strong finisher. Connor looked like someone who could step in and play in the BIG right away based off last night, do you believe that to be the case or did Muscatine's lack of overall talent have a lot to do with it? Also, is he a legit 6'6?
Wieskamp was definitely the best player on the court last night, which has been the case the last two years. Outside of Jok I think he might be the best wing on Iowa's team now. He'll be an instant impact player.

I think Connor would benefit from a RS year but I also could see him contributing next year. He's strong, which is one of the challenges for freshmen. I think he could hold up physically. He has a high BB IQ for sure, which also will help his transition.

CM is not 6-6, IMO. More 6-4ish. But I'm also not good at gauging height on people. Patrick seems a legit 6-7 and Wieskamp 6-6.

Joe is going to come to Iowa and make an impact immediately as a Fr., he is that good. That is the year things are going to get very, very fun for Iowa basketball:

Bohannon - Jr
Cook - Jr
Moss - Jr
Pemsl - Jr
Baer - Sr
Ellingson - Sr
Garza - So
Nunge - So
Joe - Fr
Connor - So

I agree and I have high expectations for Fran two years from now. I think most of us would at that point as it would be year ten and at that point we will have seen the best Fran has to offer. I see better days ahead. If not, then we can discuss it at that point.

I reckon I was at that ballgame last night. JW is the real deal. He has NO help on his team. And I don't think his team is well coached. But JW can score with the long ball, pull up, or can take it to the rack. Very athletic and very smart player. Plays some defense too.

CM plays defense as well and for those who don't think he is a pg, I don't know what you are seeing. CW sees the court about as well as I have seen anyone see it. Gets the ball to where it needs to go or can create his own shot....anytime. I hope he plays basketball at Iowa because he will be a good one. Let's hope he doesn't get drafted too high in the baseball draft in June.

PM is going to be really good. I have seen the tape measurement and he is just a hair under 6"9". He doesn't use his length that well yet as he is not strong but when that comes it is Katy bar the door. He is a guard but will have to play forward. Handles are really solid. He needs some more post moves as he is not yet real clever down low. I really like his potential. Has high confidence as do both the McCaffery boys...almost to a fault, but he gets the job done more often than not. Best attribute for all three boys is they can shoot the rock at a high level.

Blisters shore kin hurt. Yep.

Been saying all season ... next year, dance, prolly 1-n-done but dance, nonetheless. 2018 - 2019, I anticipate watching Iowa on the 2nd weekend.

While I often slip up, it's why I'm not too worried, nor (try not to) get worked up about what's happening this season. This is laying the foundation. Lemme tell ya -- it is sturdy and true and, when you step back, it's actually meeting, if not slightly exceeding, expectations.:)

^^This^^. It sounds like if he wasn't triple and double teamed the whole game, he could have found 50 pts if he wanted. Fran's gotta be licking his chops getting JW. I can't wait until he signs and we can hear Fran & coaches talk about him. He has an overall game. I'm more excited about him as a recruit more than any other in a long time. Seems like we've been hearing about this kid for years. He just has a great overall game.

Fran's gotta love that his sons will be playing with him. This might just be the recruit and situation with his sons that keeps the McCaffery's at Iowa for the next 6-7 years.

Two questions Rob.

1) If you had to nit pick, what would you say JW needs to work on or what if any, is the weak part of his game at this point?

2) Do you think Fran sees Iowa as a destination job or eventually moving on if Iowa is terrific the next several years?

I'll just hang up and listen!
I don't see any holes in his game. It might be his dribble drive but it's so hard to tell because he's always drawing 2 or 3 defenders. I would like to see him defend another 6'7, high D-1 talent. That I haven't really seen yet. He spent all last night in a zone defense.

If Iowa went on a run and won the Big Ten tournament...I wouldn't be surprised...although looking "ahead" to better opportunities at the dance are valid.

Iowa can beat any team in the conference this year...

I presume he's guarded potential D1 talent on the AAU scene with his experience.

Well, in addition, they have their youngest Jack still coming up behind them but there is a gap in ages. I know my boys have played youth basketball against him so he now is around 10-11 yrs old.

Just like Kirk and the boys. For better or for worse, depending on your point of view.

We keep it in the family here at Iowa. That's why Alford came (Bryce Alford) Licklitter came same reason ( little licky). Now Fran. They all come because of our family values and they all imagined their kids playing for them here.
