When Regina kicked the field goal from the 1 yard line they should have taken a delay of game for a better angle. It was a crazy game.Solon converted a 2 point conversion in OT for the win 29-28
Are Regina and Solon in the same class this year?
No, I believe Regina is 2A and Solon is 3A. With the new district scheduling this season they can schedule some interesting matchups now.
Solon is 3A, but Regina is 1A. They dropped down a couple years ago. And their non-district schedule this year is nuts. @Solon, they play Cascade (who is ranked in 2A) next week, and play Xavier at the end of the year. Nobody will be more battle-tested come playoff time.
Wow, someone still remembers Waterloo East. I graduated from East in 1967 and Obie Tisdale was our QB. I have since lost track of the players but I remember Mike Roby, Reggies older brother, Dan Roth, the Hanson brothers. We had a hell of a run and the only loss this class had was a 20-18 loss to Mason City our sophomore year and we missed three extra points. Back in those days the sophomore class at East was made up of players from Mckinstry and Logan Jr. High and when we played each other in 1964 we were both undefeated and McKinstry beat us 7-6. Great memories of a long time ago. Howie Vernon was our coach at East. He had a great career. We played our games at the West Waterloo Stadium and Mike Roby would do the kicking duties and his kickoff would consistently go completely out of the back of the end zone. Tisdale and Roby were two of the best all around baseball players at that time.
I was really happy to see East turn it around a bit lately - I genuinely felt bad for the kids/school during that losing streak, especially knowing what a proud football history East has...to see them fall that far off the radar was painful. Outside of the DSM metro, I would have to think East probably draws from some of the most economically disadvantaged neighborhoods in the whole state, so I always root for them as an underdog. Also, more selfishly, you KNOW East has had D1 potential talent enrolled, but the % of kids that have a home/family situation solid enough to allow them to commit 100% to football (or just any sport) is very low compared to other schools. The better the program does, the more of that talent would become potential recruits.
