At what point can we begin to criticize your buddy Gary? I've given him a break with respect to the basketball program because he didn't pressure Ferentz to fire the best offensive coordinator in the business after the 2007 season and I like that he has let Kirk do his own thing with the football program, but at some point, GarBar has to be held responsible for the basketball program and his ill-advised decision to force Alford (who has built New Mexico into a powerhouse program) out. So, hypothetically speaking, if this new fella comes in and wins about 20 or 25 games total in 2 years, then would it be okay to criticize GarBar, or do we have to wait until at least 10 years into Barta's tenure to criticize him?
 
I love how this was posted exactly one minute after another thread titled "the nail in barta's coffin"
 
You can criticize Barta if we are hiring another basketball coach in 3 years.
You can't criticize Barta for hiring a coach who hasn't even started the job yet and expect to be taken seriously.
 
I dont see what wrong about this hire other than a few wacko fans who thought we honestly had a chance at Pearl. McCaffery is a proven program builder... unlike Lickliter, he is proven to draw good recruits out of a major metropolitan area to a less than stellar basketball school ... unlike Lickliter, and he runs a more uptempo offense with athletic players ... unlike Lickliter. I guess if you wanted someone like Pearl or Drew, I'm sorry that you had your head in the clouds.
 
Barta just made a good hire. Things will turn out well. Please wait to criticize Barta or McCaffery until it doesn't work out. Can you wait that long? He has a PROVEN record of turning programs around. You can't look at the overall record because the programs were terrible that he took over. Lick took over a program that had won 20+ twice before Lick got the program.

Please define "good" and "well." Is McCaffery a better coach and recruiter than the following B10 coaches:
Izzo
Ryan
Weber
Matta
Painter
Smith
Beilein
Crean

Should I be impressed that he managed to go 17-1 in a low major conference? Should I be impressed that he managed to lose only by 17 at UNI, matching Lickliter's performance against the Panthers?

I want the Hawks to do well, but I think this is just waving a white flag to the rest of the Big Ten. At this point, the best we can hope for is to be able to get up to 7th in the B10 and pray that the B10 gets 7 teams into the tourney. I suspect we will be fighting it out against Penn State for that coveted 10th spot in the B10 for the foreseeable future, but I hope that I am wrong about that and Fran is a superstar. I'm sure Eddie Hightower will love his wife and give us enough calls to get us up to .500 just because he likes her so much.

Right now I am inclined to say that GarBar is to Iowa basketball what Ron Guenther is to Illini football - it's greatest enemy. Hopefully time proves me wrong.

Thanks for the response. Anyone thinking of bashing Barta, please wait until his 7th year as AD is complete before bashing him. If, during that 7 year run, we win a game in the Big Ten Tournament or the NIT, the 7 year period will be extended by one year for every such win.

Actually I meant to say you can't blame him for this hire yet because you don't know if Fran will work out. I was not clear.

Regardless, all of the butthurt fans who thought we had a realistic chance at Pearl, Dixon and the like will have the the rest of the off-season to ***** and moan about a coach they don't like because he wasn't on their list. Enjoy.

C'mon. give the guy a shot. seems good to me. passionate about the game, cares about his players, kids graduate, play hard defense, family man. Sounds like a certain football coach that wasn't too high on anybodys list a few years back. Myself included. Learned my lesson. Welcome, coach Mac, and good luck! GO HAWKS!!!
