Herky Turns 70

Herky has always been pretty lame in my humble opinion. The current iteration is probably the best, but the old ones with the oversized paper mache' head...with the skinny legs sticking out in football pants. Really...that's the best you can do. Your mascot can't look inept and unathletic...how does that translate to program representation. I never understood that.

How many mascots don't have at least a degree of lameness?

IIRC Herky wasn't even supposed to be the original mascot, and only became such due to a cartoonist's drawings in the DM Reg. As much as we're all used to Herky and all it would be nice if he'd be more of an alternative, making appearances from time to time, while Iowa develops the mascot originally intended. But after 70 years it's probably too late and much too expensive and pointless to even consider. At any rate happy birthday Herky!

For decades the honor of being Herky was bestowed upon members of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity.

Does anyone even know if the Delts are on campus anymore? I could swear their house is no longer on Clinton street across from Burge Residence Hall.

Does anyone else remember Herky the scarlet macaw, whom was abducted from a local pet store in CR several years ago? He was a well-known fixture at the store for years.

When he was abducted, one of the local news stations did a parody of the show, Nightline, with a daily countdown of his abduction (Nightline with Ted Koppel got its start doing a countdown of the Iranian hostage crisis). It was pretty comical. He was found a few days later walking around in a hallway of a local hotel.

The original mascot was a black bear named Birch (1908) who was found drowned in the Iowa River in 1910
