Here's the 'what's it feel like to give up onside kick' question

i've been rethinking my view of KF in pressers. I think he handles himself pretty well. Showing emotion to the cameras in a presser adds nothing. Showing (the right kind of) emotion behind closed doors to the team is what counts. Got to hand it to him for dealing with stuff so well. BTW he's earning his salary this week.

I'd wager he was trying to get Kirk to say what he already knew. That's not uncommon for a reporter. You may already know the answer, but you need a source to say it.

I guess everyone has their style. I am not particularly fond of that approach.

'So, you ready to get it going for the black and gold this year?'

One of my 'favorites' each August Media Days.

Pretty stupid, but it gives the TV guys 15 seconds of fluff to fill in their segment.

Fair enough. Personally, if I'd asked the question, I would have maybe worded it like "Talk about that abrupt shift when the opponent recovers an onside kick." That's a little bit more subtle way of asking the same thing, and more likely to draw out the kind of answer you're looking for.

So he makes is job harder by being one of the worst game day coaches ever. Then he has to answer for it and thats how he makes his money?

Q. What's it like the last three years against Minnesota and in this past game to give up an onside kick?

COACH FERENTZ: What would you guess? I was hacked off. We've coached up the proper formation, responsibilities, and reactions, and we've practiced it a whole bunch, but somehow we got beat on that play. It's not acceptable to me, and while I take full responsibility because I'm head coach, I promise you we will drill this 'til we can't drill it anymore, and it won't happen again. Everyone involved knows we screwed up, and we're determined to fix it.
------

That's along the lines of the response I'd expect, and which Ferentz should deliver. Enough with the 'coach speak' BS and the not wanting to hurt anyone's feelings, and maintaining a poker face.
ANSWER THE DAMN QUESTION HONESTLY, COACH. Say what needs to be said. You, your staff, and your team SCREWED UP and you fumbled away another game.
Oh, and Coach Kurt? WHY WERE YOU IN THAT SITUATION, ANYWAY? WHAT HAPPENED IN THE PREVIOUS ~58 MINUTES OF THIS GAME THAT LED TO A CRAPPY MAC TEAM BEING IN A POSITION TO PWN YOU ON AN ONSIDE KICK AND WIN THE FREAKIN' GAME???
Explain yourself, "Coach". You're on the clock.

While I agree with the last question, you'd really like him if he throws his players under the bus?

How about asking,"Why don't we have a dedicated special teams coach to drill this into players until they can cover an onside kick in their sleep?" And while you're at it ask Kirk if having a dedicated QB coach would help with the development of players at that position?

The thing is Kirks been asked this question how many times over the years? And he still sucks at answering it. Atleast that matches his game plan.

A lot of the media (espn, morning and afternoon local shows, Jim Rome and more) are steamrolling this coach and our overall football program. Why is it local reporters can't do THEIR job and ask questions that everyone else is asking?

I DO NOT want KF to leave and don't want him to be fired but it would be nice if he could answer a couple of hard questions without being "testy"

Sure he does. Because he might answer, "It's no big deal, and even if I wasn't successful I would still be making this kind of money. I never really want to win." etc, etc, ad infinitum....

Great question by a brilliant media person.

I don't want to know what it feels like.

I want to know why he hasn't fixed it. I want to know if he was being genuine in his post game comments when he said his team has been good at onsides situations. I want to know how we are supposed to describe a coach that has lost three games in the past 3 seasons to inferior teams in shockingly similar situations, how attentive to detail that coach could possibly be.
