Herbstreit on Mike & Mike re: Meyer to OSU

If you try and make an argument that the Big 10 is on par with the SEC, it is difficult to take you seriously. There is a large gap in talent and coaching, and it has been getting wider every year. The Big 10 is, this season at least, scraping the bottom of the 2nd tier, looking up at the Big IX and the PAC 12.

And who cares about the Gator Bowl results? Our best can't hang with their best, but at least our 5th can beat their 5th? That is what you guys are bringing to the defense?

The Big 10 hasn't won many NC games. They've done fine in the other BCS bowls, except for Michigan who has really stunk up the joint in big time bowl games lately.

The problem with looking at the all-time record, is that 10 years ago, the Big Ten actually was at the top of the college football world. We were the SEC at the time.

But the times have changed, and now the SEC is king. And they have been since 2006.

In BCS games (including the championship), the SEC is 8-2 over the past 5 years. The Big Ten is 3-7, and Michigan just had one appearance in that span. And the Big Ten is 3-5 in non-championship BCS games. SEC is 3-2.

This ain't 2002 anymore. Things go in cycles, sure. But right now, the SEC is on top. To deny that is foolish.

Just like RichRod's offenses that dominated the B10? At the end of the day, dominating in the B10 on offense is about the big boys on the o-line. The only thing I know about October and November weather in the B10 is that it is going to be different every week and I'll take a line like several of the recent OSU lines, the 2002 or 2009 Iowa line or the 2010 Wisconsin line over any scheme when I'm rolling into Ann Arbor, East Lansing, IC, Lincoln, Madison or State Penn when its 33 degrees with a 20 mile per hour wind and sleet is falling. Hell, maybe I'm a homer but I don't think any team from the SEC could have rolled into IC the night we beat PSU in 2008 and walked out of there with a win.

The difference between Meyer and RichRod, is that at WVU, RR didn't need great linemen to dominate. Pat White, Steve Slaton, and Noel Devine were enough.

But in the SEC, you have to have those great players in the trenches too. And at Ohio State, I don't think Meyer would have much trouble getting great o-linemen.

I never claimed that the Big 10 was as good as the SEC the last half decade. Not in the least. What I did claim, is that if the SEC is so much better than the Big 10 (which is what Herbie is implying when he says that Meyer playing Big 10 defenses would be like playing scout team defenses) wouldn't their record against the Big 10 indicate that? But it doesn't.

Also, when was the last time an SEC team had to play above the mason-dixon line past November?

It depends which teams are matched up. But the best SEC teams didn't typically have a ton of trouble scoring against Big Ten teams. And Florida, under Meyer, was one of those top teams.

If you put his coaching ability in at Ohio State, with the kind of talent that they can bring in every year....well, the stranglehold the Buckeyes have had on the conference up til now could look like child's play compared to what they could do under Meyer. Imagine how much better OSU might have been if Meyer had been the one working with Pryor instead of Tressel?

It's a beautiful thought ....:D

How did that spread thing work out for Rodriguez at Michigan? I think Urban Meyer might be a huge bust at O$U. We'll see

I live in SEC country. I watch a lot of these games. The SEC is way faster than the B1G, but the B1G is way better with respect to fundamentals.

That being said, the SEC is playing by a totally different set of rules. When you go to an SEC school for sports, you are funneled into a select set of majors designed to keep you eligible. They have a file cabinet of past tests for the courses in the major in the academic support centers. Boosters have unprecedented access to players and player families. Poor performing players are sent packing.

As has been said about this move for Meyer, if he wants to spend more time with his family, he can do that in the B1G, not in the SEC.

RichRod had the #1 total offense in the B10 last year, RichRod's offense was fine once he got the athletes to run it. Defense was always the problem under RR....

Rumor control = Fickal as D-coord, Spielman as LB's coach, Herbie as QB's coach.

The chickens are all coming home to roost.

Fickell will stay on as either assistant HC or DC. Speilman may be on staff he'll decide by tomorrow, no on Herbie.
