I wan't a fan of the officiating but wasn't upset about it afterwards. The officiating will favor the home team the vast majority of the time. It's not even worth discussing IMO. We have to play better than the other team and poor officiating combined. That's what good teams do. We win the game if we do the things right which we could control.

I think it should be discussed at nausium by as many people as possible until something is done about it. It's crazy that it is common knowledge that the home team gets special treatment and everyone just accepts it as the way it is. It makes no sense at all. Call the game fair and let the team that plays better win.

I think Iowa state got the home town calls, the same thing we can expect when Iowa State comes to Carver next season. Iowa lost the game because they did not hit the shots and free throws they needed down the stretch in order to win the game.

You're right that they lost because they missed free throws but they were in position to lose largely due to the crappy officiating. I get the thought process of only worrying about things you can control but to say that the officials didn't play a huge outcome in the game is inaccurate.

Not to be a homer, but there are not many games in my memory at carver that I thought wow, glad we're playing at home and got those calls.

It is crazy but it has been this way for a very long time. I'm not going to pretend I don't yell at my television like most everyone but I let it go when the game is over. At the end of the day this is a variable out of everyone's control.

If the NCAA could just make a small profit they could hire full time officials, hold them accountable, train them year round, etc. I'm pretty sure they could afford to do this in both football and basketball.

I get what you're saying. I do find myself watching a home game and at times thinking "I'm glad we're at Carver because that call goes the other way on the road." Of course it always appears to be the correct call to me...but am I being biased or just happy to at least get it called down the middle? It could be some of both especially depending on the game. I will NOT miss Hightower!

Or how about we stop complaining about the officiating and just hit the shots necessary to win the game? The officials are only human and I am sure they are doing the best they can to call a fair game, but the home crowd and the emotions of a rivalry game can have an impact. These are not robots running up and down the court.

It would be hard to not have the crowd impact you when making the call. They were screaming at the officials after every foul on isu. That has to get in your head. I personally will never stop complaining tho. It's hard enough to go on the road and beat a ranked team strait up. Being 10-15 points better just to sneak out a win is asking a lot.

I'm curious how the "Don't blame the refs" crowd felt about the Iowa/MSU game last year at Carver. If you didn't think the officiating was one-sided in that game I feel sorry for you because you have no comprehension of how the game is supposed to be officiated.

Also, when both teams are playing tough D in the first half, but one is shooting a lot of 3's and the other is taking it to the rim, which team would you expect to be in the double bonus and which team would only have three fouls? And in the 2nd half of the same game, the team that is behind is playing tight D trying to catch up is in the double bonus while the team that is ahead is still not shooting the one-and-one. Just wondering how to explain that. This is what happened in the ISU game, but not much different than what happened in the MSU game, where I was dumb-founded that the visiting team was getting the home team calls.

Yep, that game sucked but it does not change my opinion of the last game.

You want to see a game completely taken over by the refs then look up the video of the game on December 6th, 2011. The officiating was so bad that it killed the home crowds enthusiasm. The first time I have ever left a game early.

Interesting that people want to blame to blame the refs for the loss... I wonder who made the calls that gave MG a chance to win tie or win the game at the end? Wow. Some people got to find excuses for everything.

As far as coaching is concerned... I would say it was good coaching that gave the Iowa team a chance to win the games vs. losing.

I cant find the breakdown of how many per half, but both teams shot 17 3's each and ISU only made 2 more than Iowa. ISU wasnt getting any great looks at 3 because of Iowa's D and ultimately it led to them going more to the rim this game. Im not sure what you said is valid here, unless Im misreading it.

Actually I just added up the first half from the pay by play. Iowa took 12 in the first half and ISU took 10.

No doubt ISU drove to the basket quite a bit, I think by design as Hoiberg saw how the refs were calling the game. I do believe they were benefiting from calls down low that Iowa was not getting on the other end. I also think there were fouls called when there wasn't much contact. Refs anticipate contact way too much and blow the whistle in most every game. I think it was a little lopsided, due to the fact that ISU was in the bonus or double bonus in both halves very early, while ISU only had a few fouls called against them. Maybe Iowa was not being as physical taking it to the rim as much. But, I remember thinking that is was a terribly reffed game against Iowa and it wasn't just because it was ISU. Up to that game, Iowa had been a team to draw alot of fouls and play defense without fouling much. Of course, they had not played a team as good as ISU. However, I don't think the refs cost Iowa that game. Iowa did everything thing they needed to do to be in a position to win regardless of the environment and how the game was being called. Make your FT's and they win that game easily. But as we all know, they didn't! Hopefully they will the next time they are in that situation. I am ready for the next game and then the start of the Big 10.
