Head Coach or the Coordinators

Was listening to Cowheard today while driving. He was discussing USC (imagine that) and the fact that their D is so bad. Was also talking about how Lane Kiffen would probably have to fire his dad at the end of the year.

The went on to say how important coordinators are. Said look at Oklahoma, not the same since Stoop's brother left for AZ (now he is back). FSU is not the same since Richt left for Georgia. Texas is not the same since Muschamp left.

He then said, perfect example is Iowa. Look at how far they have fallen. KF is a to 15 head coach, but they have 2 new coordinators, and the transition has been a complete flop. He ended his spiel with, "you want to know the importance of coordinators, just look at Iowa."

I understand KF hired both, just want to know what everyone thinks. Is KF the problem or the coordinators he chose to run his offense and defense?

Yes

I think all they need to do is after this season all three of them need to write letters of apology double spaced and a minimum of 150 words.

Interesting. Did Cowherd watch the Michigan game? Did he not notice the tremendous lack of talent on Iowa? I have my complaints for the coaching staff, but talent is the biggest issue right now.

If I had to choose, I would go axe the coordinators, but only if Captain gave the new guys a little more freedom in their strategery.

Cowherd doesn't watch sports.

I would axe Kirk, that way we are rid of all of them

If you look at recruiting except 2005 then you will see that Iowa has marginal talent being signed except when Bret B was around. I believe Iowa must have an entire staff that can recruit and coach the players up when they do get there.

The problem has started to be addressed with some younger more dynamic people on the staff but who knows if any of them have a great football mind like Norm.

In short the only way you will see major change is to figure out a low buy out of KF's contract so you can bring in someone with the ability to pay top assistants and not be hamstrung by salaries of past coaches. Norm is the one exception to a life time assistant that was actually a football mind. Most top programs have coordinators who used to be head coaches but were unsuccessful on their own. (see Alabama/Oklahoma)

Get rid of all 3 with Ferentz being the 1st. Norm carried Ferentz all these years and O'Keefe did too but his impact was less as Ferentz interfered with his play calling and system employed. Somewhat the same thing happened to Fry when Snyder and Brashier left plus he was nearing the end of his career which was used against him in recruiting. Ferentz would have been a failure, if it weren't for Norm. Norm was the man, not Ferentz as it turns out.

I prefer doodles in the margins. A nice liger or a flaming skull, but font size should be at least a 14 pt for the old fans that can't see well.

Agree about the font size. 12 is okay for me. Always fond of calibri. I like to doodle hearts and flowers. And eyeballs. Something about eyeballs....

I would be perfectly fine keeping Ferentz and dumping Davis and Parker. The Davis experiment has been a complete disaster, and Parker has really disappointed. We don't play nearly enough man coverage, and we still aren't blitzing at opportune times. Our defensive line is a clear weakness, and instead of changing up our schemes to adjust for this we sit there and watch a game like Michigan where we got NO pressure on the QB all game long.

I don't buy that we don't have the talent. We absolutely have more talent than ISU, CMU, Indiana, and Purdue. At the end of the day it's on the coaches.

Coordinators were awful choices. We all knew PP was inevitable, and we all knew he was lackluster to begin with. GDGD was an awful decision, and I think KF just pulled a Frank Pentangeli with that choice.... "They said Greg Davis did this, they said Greg Davis did that. So I said, 'Yeah, sure.'"

So you have to replace either KF or the coordinators. Who do you replace? Just looking for opinions.

As many have explained there are $20M reasons why you can't get KF outta there for probably 3 years but you can get rid of GD and PP. The D looks utterly confused out there...it's really embarrassing to watch. I'm almost ashamed to walk out the door with my Tiger Hawk garb on.

KF wouldn't know a good coordinator if he got bit by one. He has never coordinated anything. He is not that far removed from an O line coach at Drake. The guy hit the powerball numbers when his name came up for the Iowa interview and Bowlsby refused Stoops.
