I would probably find myself in the "defend Lickliter" camp, but for one problem that's gnawed at me for awhile. It's the fact that Lick has never "owned" the results of his tenure.
In the end, he might be the biggest whiner, complainer and deflector I've come across in major college athletics. He couldn't win because Iowa doesn't have a practice facility, players that weren't his have transferred, he can't recruit All-Big Ten players out of high school so the staff has to work harder to build them up to that caliber, we play 18 Big Ten games now instead of 16 so the grind is harder on the players, the team is too young, his system takes a long time to implement and perfect, blah, blah, blah.
And that's not even addressing the ******** complaints this year about playing 4 of the 1st 5 BT games at home when students are away, or having to play on the road 2 straight times on the opponents' Senior Night, or having a 9 day lag between games, blah, blah, blah.
Excuses are for losers. Iowans, by nature, are a forgiving and supportive group if the person can be humble, accept responsibility, and show signs of production.
EVERYONE expected a terrible year this year.....EVERYONE. So why are the fans turning on him when the season played out at (or even above) most fans' expectations? In my opinion, it's because he never owned it....he never took responsibility for it. I understand if he feels that a lot of things aren't really his fault or under his control. But guess what, nobody cares. All anyone knows is that Todd Lickliter is the coach of the Iowa Hawkeyes and we have just experienced losing on a scale that surpases anything that's ever happened in the history of the program and as the face of this program, he HAD to own it. He didn't. That, more than anything, in my opinion, is what drove fans crazy and ultimately against him.
