Someone called in and asked Ferentz if we can do anything to stop the short passes. Ferentz basically said that every defense has a soft spot and that we would rather not give up a big play. He said that 5-8 yard passes usually don't kill you. Nothing is going to change with this guy so stop laying all the blame on KOK and Parker. We are running KF's offense and defense, and as long as he's around we will continue to do so.

Normally, I agree. But NW and IU DON'T WANT TO GO DEEP!!! Take away the offense's strength.

Uhhh hey Kirk....OSU beat us deep....NW beat us short long.....I believe Minnesota beat us deep today didn't they? And oh lets not forget Indiana that beat us deep every time they needed something deep...so KF must be daydreaming on the sideline....the Defense was plain ole bad despite the homers on this board and their stats.

good teams do both. Also I don't see many teams covering the slot receiver with a linebacker as often as we do. We give up 5-10 yard passes all day long. Might be better off giving up a few BIG playes and get the ball back a little quicker. Because of the fumbled snap and kick return our offense had the ball twice in the 1st half.

When we lose games like this (as has happened this year and before) the reason is because of how we play. Comments were made during the game today and throughout KF's coaching career that what we do on defense is a base defense and we do it well. Even after today, I believe that. But the question the person asked on the call-in show shows why we lose. We can run our base D all we want, but if the "O" executes their short pass plays (which has happened repeatedly) we are not able to stop it.

As great of a job as anybody can do in a base D, which we do, you can't stop a short passing offense unless they make BAD mistakes which means a horrid pass which results in a turnover. This means we play to get turnovers against this offense and a base D does not do this on a consistent basis.

It's easy enough for any of us to understand, but since we started to get some success out of the base D some years ago, KF believes it is THE defense to go with. Therein, lies our problems this year and years past.

There's no reason for, with the talent we have, that we shouldn't take care of the teams we lost to this year and some teams in years past.
