Hawks Win Ugly Over CMU

Woodbury looks much better than I thought he would. He moves so well for a 7'1 player. He was matched up against a perimeter player last night on a possession at the 3 point line and shut down his penetration on the baseline. Hes very active as well. His offense will come, but I really like what he can bring defensively and on the boards right now. Hes gonna be great.

Glad to read posts like this...I was worried that people were going to expect 10 & 7 out of him

I agree too. I was impressed with his play as well. One thing I would like to see is that he and Gesell get haircuts.

What is the deal with Ogelsby (sp?)? He didn't see the floor very much last night. Bad matchup or anyone have any insight?
I liked what I saw out of Woodbury, Olesani, Basabe, etc. Really impressed with Gesell and Clemons. Couple of bad decisions with passes. But overall came away very impressed with their games.

Fran said he wanted his ball handlers in the game in the second half especially after Iowa built the lead and CMU was going to press

I thought Woodbury looked good..... and a lot like Walt Jr.

Flynn, if you please.

People need to give Keno some credit, guy can coach his butt off! He mixed up the defenses and his young kids played their fannies off. Great noncon game for the Hawks, hope attendence improves because this team is going to be fun to watch.

Absolutely agree with the comments on Keno. I watched the game on TV and throughout, I kept thinking...wow. This Keno guy can downright coach! To Fran's credit: He adjusted in the second half with an absolutely stellar coaching move, went small and quick, and got it done. Iowa shooting in the first half was terrible, and last year, early in the season, that may have spelled defeat. Not any more.

I think Keno showed what a team will need to do to beat the Hawks. You will need to rotate a lot of players and keep fresh legs. If your not able to I think Fran will run the whole game to tire out the other team so they don't have the shooting legs down the stretch.

Still have defending issues. Got beat on the drive a few times and a few wide open threes.

All and all they won and I am excited to watch this team threw the year.

My buffalo bills play Thursday and the hawks are playing a team with the bills logo. Game on TV and Iowa basketball on the laptop. I'll be in bacon heaven if they both win!

Got a chance to go to the game last night and feel pretty good about the team even after their less than stellar performance. We were clearly the more talented team on the court, which we haven't always been able to say against mid major teams over the last five years. I thought we got gun shy as a team after missing some long jumpers early. Iowa was getting good looks on 3's and long 2's but after missing their first few shots we started trying to force it inside against a packed in zone and turned it over several times.

The depth on this team is obviously a huge step up from year's past, but as much as Fran has talked about playing 10 every night he's really going to play 7-8 guys once he finds who's into the game. I think Marble, White and Gesell will all get 30+ mins each night once we get into B10 play. The offense bogs down way too much without at least two of those guys on the court.

I think Gesell will be the most important player in determining Iowa's B10 sucess this year. It's a lot of pressure on a freshman but he needs to step up and become a near elite 3 point shooter or else Iowa is going to have spacing issues on offense that we didn't see last year thanks to Gatens. Fran had a real quick hook on Ogelsby last night as Ogelsby passed up several pretty good looks in the first half, Clemmons is a better ballhandler and defender than Ogelsby so hopefully Josh gets more confidence in his shot and starts letting them fly or else he's going to fall out of the rotation.

I agree that this was a gam that Iowa could have lost last November. Iowa has depth this year and when Zach got into foul trouble, and with Josh still struggling from 3, Iowa had just come in and pick the team up.

I like the deep rotation that Iowa has. They were able to press a lot and keep fresh bodies in there.

the best thing is we got to watch MG and AC play together, even Marble was bringing the ball up some.. those 3 were
Marble 2-4 from 3
Clemmons 2-4 from 3
Gessel 3-6 from 3
now who are you going to dbl team when those 3 are on the court together?

Woodbury is going to be a big part of this team. Hard-working, unselfish player. This is the kind of kid you can build a program around. He doesn't have to score a lot to be a big factor. In fact, at least so far, Fran seems to be recruiting kids with intelligence and a lot of character. It is very refreshing.

I know there will be losses and bumps in the road, but you can see the foundation being put in for the future.

I think we're still another big wing player away from being an upper tier B10 team. I really wish we could throw a Gesell-Marble-Uthoff-White-Basabe line up out there this season. I think playing White at the 3 spot in the B10 is going to take away some of his effectiveness but that is the one spot we are really lacking quality depth this year. If May can bounce back/improve this season, there's a huge role available for him.

I tend to agree with this. I think a very effective lineup could be Clemmons, Gesell, Marble, White, and Woody. I like May coming off the bench, but this allows Marbe to play the 3, and White the 4, where they will match up better defensively.

Iowa 73-61 win against Central Michigan wasn't pretty, but it's a game they may well have lost one season ago.

Agree...I say we did lose our share of "ugly" last season (early)....
