Hawks Win Ugly Over CMU

Don't think I could have been able to stomach a loss to CMU seriously would have thrown up all over our booth at Red Robins. I know I know big spender....

Woodbury is really an interesting player, even this early in his career:

1. He is not afraid to mix it up - he plays hard and he bangs people.
2. He alters a lot of shots. Iowa hasn't had that for many years.
3. He can pass.

I think he averages about 15-18 minutes per game and will be a solid part of this team....

Clemmons at the point with Gesell the shooting guard also is extremely interesting. Gesell can really shoot the rock.

Lots of options with this young team

I liked when Marble, Gessel and Clemmons were on the court at the same time. I'm sure it was done to combat the press but having three guys who can dribble is fun.

Marble played 40 minutes
Clemmon 2-4 from 3
Gesell 3-6 from 3
Marble 2-4 from 3
7-14 from 3 combined. that type of production from those 3 will make it tough for any team to try and single out just one player to stop

Iowa turned this game when it went to the small line-up in the second half; Clemmons, Gesell, Marble, May, and White/Basabe. CMU was small but quick. The positive was Iowa could go small when it had to. It didn't have to worry about foul trouble because of depth. Overall first half was not pretty, but once Iowa got the right combo on the floor in the 2nd half things improved.

You got that right... be it Aaron, Zach, Woody, May, the Big O... I don't care. Then bring in Josh to light it up...

the CMU game is a "GROW" game and figure it out. Plenty of time to do so.

just nice to have more depth this year so that Iowa can mix and match. Shame Iowa wasn't able to take advantage of its massive height difference though. Interesting to see if Gesell will be the best Iowa guard since, well, who knows. Dude plays like a veteran so far.

I really like how Fran adjusted his game plan midway through. Not to pile on Football but it's refreshing to see the coaching staff change things up when things aren't going our way. Fran saw that we were turning over the basketball too much tonight and that CMU wasn't playing very big so Fran put in smaller ball handlers.

I thought Woodbury looked good..... and a lot like Walt Jr.

Iowa 73-61 win against Central Michigan wasn't pretty, but it's a game they may well have lost one season ago.

People need to give Keno some credit, guy can coach his butt off! He mixed up the defenses and his young kids played their fannies off. Great noncon game for the Hawks, hope attendence improves because this team is going to be fun to watch.

It's nice to see that Iowa has enough talent to pull off a win when things don't go well against a lesser opponent. It's refreshing.

This team will have its ups and downs, and there are a lot of moving parts, but at least those moving parts have some real potential!

Agreed. I think it was good for the Hawks to have a game like this early in the season - one where you didn't play particularly well, your opponent battled you for 40 minutes, and you had to figure out some things to win the game.

Hawks played much better in the second half though and were able to separate themselves from CMU.. It went from a tied game to a 15 point lead pretty quickly, which was encouraging. There were alot of coaching points to come out of this game.. Again, that's a good thing IMO. Better to find out these things now, rather than in January.

And to state the obvious: Mike Gesell is going to be a great Hawkeye!

Woodbury looks much better than I thought he would. He moves so well for a 7'1 player. He was matched up against a perimeter player last night on a possession at the 3 point line and shut down his penetration on the baseline. Hes very active as well. His offense will come, but I really like what he can bring defensively and on the boards right now. Hes gonna be great.

What is the deal with Ogelsby (sp?)? He didn't see the floor very much last night. Bad matchup or anyone have any insight?
I liked what I saw out of Woodbury, Olesani, Basabe, etc. Really impressed with Gesell and Clemons. Couple of bad decisions with passes. But overall came away very impressed with their games.
