Hawks (unconsidered) Rivalry Save/Win...

Northwestern:

My argument for why NW should earn our consideration:
1) Many were upset when we originally lost Illinois (border state) the last couple of years (and I will admit that I hate ILL) but Northwestern works within geographical logic as well. Also, although Illinois went to the Rose in 2007, I consider the Cats the better program in the last decade + by showing more consistency (especially 08/09 moving forward).
2) With as much bragging as our fan base does about 7of last8 from PSU, we feel disrespected if it is not fully validated that we currently have a rivalry with PSU. (by the way, they don't make last year a whiteout if they don't view us as a big game!) I would hope most rational fans would give Northwestern their credit by upgrading our recent history to a game we circle on the calendar.
3) Northwestern views us as the program it wants to compete with consistently to prove that it has arrived as a player in the B10...(started with barnett's philosophy:mad:, and has continued with Fitz, *who is a class coach:). best of both worlds-philosophy began with someone we can hate, and is continued by someone we can respect:) Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and Fitz has stated publicly that he views the Iowa program as something He and NW aspire to.
4)There may not be a bigger rallying cry for Iowa Fans than being under-appreciated, so let's not be hypocritical and deny NW their due. They unfortunately HAVE beaten us 4of the last 5:eek:

Finally: I think some of this is on NW! I believe that if they had a solid-decent following (at least MSU level or bigger) that this could grow in relevance...so until they get consistent fan support, this likely won't grow into a full blown rivalry, but I think that it deserves consideration moving forward!

It's too bad the Big Ten didn't base their decision from the 2007 season to the present like your argument....but I agree. Purdue is usless as a rival for Iowa. REALLLLLY big letdown. I know we can get Wisconsin back in 2015 when we go to a 9 game schedule and can secure a second cross-division rival, but until then we are stuck with starting a season with Minnesota and attempting at a half hearted attempt to care about Purdue. FML

Again, we weren't going to get everything we wanted, so there's no use complaining about it (Wisconsin/Purdue).

And there is no rivalry with Penn State, I hate to say it. Did they make it a Whiteout last year? Yes. Does that mean they thought it was a big game? Yes. Does that make it a rivalry? No. They wanted revenge for us destroying their national title hopes. The 6 of 7 added to it some, but the big motivator was the 2008 loss. When they finally get that revenge, their fans won't care nearly as much about beating Iowa as they do right now. And unless they derail OUR national title hopes in the process, we aren't going to be thirsty for revenge, either.

I do view Northwestern as a rival. That's been a competitive series the past 15 years or so (neither side really dominates). We've given them a high hard one (2000), they've given some to us (2005, 2006, 2008, 2009). Now while I consider them a rival, I also don't think I'm as arrogant as a lot of PSU fans are or can be. They are never going to treat schools other than Michigan and Ohio State as "true" rivals. Everyone else is beneath them. We have a lot of Hawk fans who feel that way about Northwestern, but I certainly don't.

My wife and her entire family are Purdue fans, so this is ok by me. Also, I think Purdue is going to get better and better. In a few years they could be a pretty competitive team in the B10
