Hawks Stock: Coaching Staff Evaluation

As has been said so often, we just need a new OC. What were KOK's credentials when KF hired him to begin with?

I think we all know that we need a new OC.

The more important question is why does Kirk not want a new OC. The evidence is jarring.

Both Offenses for those teams are terrible and I thought this before the greatest game of this century. They also have great recruiting . Doesn't hinder that they are in the SEC and ESPN pimps them out. So, as a team in the Big Ten, we have to change our philosophy.

I agree that we need to see an improvement in regard to the productivity of Iowa's offense but disagree with your comment that both LSU and Alabama offenses are terrible. They both have numerous NFL draft picks on offense but when it comes right down to it they always's beat the best teams with Great Defense.
Here are the point totals LSU put up during the regular season.
40 pts (Oregon)
49 pts (NW St)
19 pts (Miss St)
47 pts (West VA)
35 pts (Kentucky)
41 pts (Florida)
38 pts (Tenn)
45 pts (Auburn)
9 pts (Alabama)
42 pts (West Kentucky)
52 pts (Mississippi)
41 pts (Arkansas)

Yep, the offense has been my gripe for the past several years. The D typically does it's job, and does it quite well. I'd still like to see the D hold more regularly on 3rd down, but I guess that would be easier to do if they weren't on the field the majority of the game and were fresher. Translated: The offense needs to stay on the field longer and give the D a chance to rest.

Proof's in the pudding - our offensive stats are pretty typically middle of the pack or worse. I'm not asking for Top 10 offenses every year.. I'd be plenty happy to have offenses typically around 25-30 or so, nationally. Just having a productive offense to go with a stout D, and we would be awfully tough to beat.

It's funny Jon would go here. You call on Sound Off and it's all apology, all the time.

I wish he could have pulled a stat on the number of times we run off tackle after calling a time out on a key 3rd down. Even my dead grandpa knows what the call is going to be.

Don't get me started on our 3rd down defense, I'm getting to the point where I wonder if teams PURPOSELY get into 3rd and 7 situations so we run that pathetic defensive scheme.

And Don't dare to bring up expecting performance for reimbursement with Jon, he's spend too much with the RWNJ Deese to have a clear head about that.

Lots of posters like Iowa's defense because, when compared to Iowa's offense, it's the stronger unit. Hey, I agree.

Ferentz plans it that way.. Let me repeat so maybe it'll sink in.. Ferentz plans it that way. He's a conservative coach.

Ferentz wants an offense that doesn't make mistakes. Ferentz wants an offense that will take time away from the opponent's offense. Does that sound like an anemic offense? Why, yes it does.

More importantly to him, Ferentz wants a strong defense. He wants a defense that will stonewall the other team. That type of Iowa defense has been absent the last 2 seasons. Under Ferentz, every year Iowa's defense isn't strong is also a year Iowa's record is mediocre.

So, are you one of those 'puddinheads' that blames KOK? Are you one of those 'puddinheads' that thinks a new OC will make things all hunky dory? Do you really believe a new OC under Ferentz will call plays any differently?

Next year, Iowa's defense will not be strong. Will Ferentz release 'the reins from the offense'? He didn't this year. In one of his press conferences this season, He said going shotgun and no-huddle was "not the right direction for the offense".

Soundoff is an off the cuff, emotional reactionary show that changes from week to week based upon one outcome.

I don't like playing that knee jerk game.

I always take a look at things in their entirety after the season is over, which is what this is.

On the radio show, I always try to start out with a mindset of staying out of the way...but there are just some opinions that are shared that are so out there, I cannot help myself but go the other way. Just my nature.

Which is just one of the reasons why I am seriously considering whether or not to remain a part of it. I am sure there are more than a few people sick of me being on there after eight years and there are aspects of the program which I am no longer fond of.

I'd really, really miss doing the show with Jim and Ed, however.

But this is never a good time of year for me to make such a decision...because most years, after the season is over, I feel like I don't want to come back and do it again ;)

Jon, just my two cents.. but I hope you do come back to Sound Off. It is such an iconic show and a very important part of the whole Saturday Hawkeye football experience for so many Iowans! I am afraid that without your steadying influence, the show may devolve into something a whole lot less satisfying.
I love having Jim on there, but.... his reminisces, although dearly loved and appreciated, tend to lead the discussions astray at times, and you have a very tactful way of getting back to the topic at hand.
I look so forward to Sound Off after each game, and I know I speak for many others, if you leave, I feel it won't be long before Sound Off is gone as well.:(

Jon always brings up the offensive production stats. These stats and rankings do show a problem and I dont think it is an execution problem. I would hope that Iowa could average a ranking around 35-40 in offensive production over the years. Iowa usually has a good running game and good offensive lines.

So the problem IMO is in the passing game. The passing game is where Iowa needs upgrading. As an earlier poster mentioned I dont know if KOK and the passing game coaches know how to attack the opponents safeties. I watch games in Kinnick where for the most part the receivers do not run patterns that threaten or make the safeties make decisions that the Hawk QB can read and make a throw off of. Too many times the Iowa receivers are spread across the field all at the same level down the field. If Iowa could have a passing game to match their running game their offense could be very dynamic.

Totally agree with this. Some is on the players, some is on the positions they are being put in and the formations they are trying to execute out of.

Yeah, that is what I took from your write up.

I also agree with the run first, pro-style philosophy. But, like you and others have mentioned, there is a way to run pro-style and still be creative and unpredictable.

Always liked how Norm Chow's pro-style offenses worked.

No doubt. If this is "bad offense"...I'll take it.

Iowa usually has a good running game and good offensive lines.

Iowa has had more offensive linemen drafted into the NFL than any other school since 2003, according to Iowa Sports Info.

But the last five years, Iowa's rushing yards per game average has been around 72 in the nation out of 120.

If 60 out of 120 is average, Iowa's running game has been below average...and that 72 ranking is bolstered by a 22 ranking in 2008 from Shonn Greene and arguably the second best OL of the Ferentz era.

Outside of that, meh

P.S. "We've also found that having more talent than the opponent usually puts more entries in the win column is a misconception." ;)

Jon, most of us who post here have plenty of time to think about what to say. (Doesn't mean I do that well). We realize that's not the case for you on Soundoff. I think that your availability on HN makes us all feel special, we feel we know you, ( I am lucky that I do), and HN gives us an opportunity to discuss your comments on Soundoff. Hope you'll be on Soundoff for many more years.

One of the main reasons why Iowa has so many OL drafted is because of the zone blocking scheme Iowa uses. Many NFL teams use that.
Personally, I hate it. I think it makes Iowa's offense passive.
Its another in a long line of not using your personnel properly. Marcus Coker is not a cut back RB. Fred Russell, yes. Marcus Coker, no. IMO this is why Coker looks so tentative, looking for that cut back instead of just plowing ahead behind a lead FB.

Ed Podolak would disagree with you. Strongly. He has said more than 5 times this fall on Soundoff that Coker is one of the best backs Iowa has had at seeing the cutback lanes.

Now, he might not get there as fast as Russell.

Ed certainly knows more than I and I think the "not getting there" is what I see.
My question to Ed would then be, if Marcus can't get there what's the point? I can "not get there" as well;)
Its been obvious to most of us that Marcus has been tentative a lot of the time. So why not tell him, follow Brad, and GO!
