Hawks Ranked #18 in SI Poll

I am curious what people here think about Brock Purdy and the Clones offensive successes last year compared to how they will be this year. I think they will take a step backwards. Clearly if you look at their last 4 games they Didn't exactly dominate in their wins and they won with the best Running Back and Wide receiver to ever play for the Clones. Brock's numbers were fairly decent but look at who the leading receiver and running back were for EVERY game. Heck in two of those last 4 games Montgomery was 2nd in receiving behind Butler. I recall multiple times watching their games last year and Brock throwing behind Butler or so high he had to lay out with one arm to pull the ball in. Don't forget how many drives Montgomery kept going for them based on his rare ability to gain those extra few yards and not to go down on the first or even second tackles. I guess I am just a bit tapered on the hype for them but who knows we will find out soon enough!
With Nebraska lets not forget that they have still meh offensive and defensive lines with no one there to take the helm at center which is quite important. Their defense could be a little better but it is still a unit that may struggle. The Nebby offense lost their starting/best wide receiver and running back this past year so it will be interesting to see if they can live up to the hype even with the easier schedule. Lets not forget Maurice Washingtons status is up in the air as well.

No way are the clones are going to be better this on offense, however if they simply equal or come close to last year, they’ll win 8 games. Their defensive line and LBs are already best in BIG 12. If they have 80% of the production of last year, they’ll be okay. It’s impossible to replace Montgomery and butler without a hiccup. Replacing those two are like replacing fant and TJH for Iowa.

I'm definitely not sold on Purdy yet. He was very average their last 4 games despite only playing against 1 good defense (WSU). ISU doesn't have a WR on their roster that is anywhere near as talented as Butler. He won't be able to just chuck the ball downfield and get bailed out. Losing Montgomery will also hurt a lot as well. The two freshmen RB's they brought in look very talented, but they won't be as good out of the gate, and they won't be anywhere near as good blocking. ISU fans seem to think their offense will be better this season despite losing the best RB and WR in school history. It's actually really confusing.

Does that mean that Iowa's offense will be worse this year because they lost Fant, Hockeson and Easley?

Maybe, but I can think of only a couple of non-QB skill guys where when they left the offense looked noticeably worse. They were McNutt and Shonn Greene. But the 2009 offense got better real fast due to the passing game McNutt and DJK brought. I guess Wadley belongs on that list as well.

Iowa's offense craps the bed when we don't have a QB or lose a bunch of guys on the line.

That is what I was thinking as well. I know for sure with Iowa's offense we won't have TE's like we did but we likely will have serviceable replacements there at least and have all the WR around returning except Easley. I just as you said am confused as to why everyone thinks the clones will be even better despite their losses. Having Butler and Montgomery around caused other teams to account for those two more than a regular RB or WR and often extra guys to account for one or the other. This is turn gave Purdy the chance to do different things or to run for a first down because there was extra coverage on Butler or Montgomery had multiple players bite on a fake to him.

If we're just talking about the 2 major polls:

Iowa started and ended 2004 & 2009 ranked.

2005, 2006, 2010, & 2016 were all seasons in which Iowa started ranked but ended unranked.

I see in 2003 Iowa was not ranked in either pre-season poll but did move up to 25 before their first game that season. So some may count that as starting and ending a season ranked.

It's weird. Iowa is ranked in multiple pre-season polls this year, but I was probably more excited about Iowa's chances in 2018.

Maybe if Fant, Hock, Hooker and Nelson would have stuck around in 2019, I would feel better about Iowa's chances to have a great year this year.

Those 3 made up 37% of the yards and 38% of the TDs.
Montgomery and butler were 57% of ISUs yards and 50% of the TDs.
Not a good comparison

Totally agree. Legit offense or not, Purdy is going to be missing Montgomery and Butler.

In a normal program, I would agree about the TE s back. There will be less of a distraction. KF will give up production over distractions.
