When do they make the first round of cuts and who's in danger of not making it?

teams must cut their rosters to 80 players by August 30 and 53 players by September 3.

As for this year's rookies, I think Clayborn, Stanzi, Ballard, Sash, Klug are locks to make a 53 man roster. Donahue is in a real tight battle. Not sure about Vandervelde, but more than likely.

The other UFA's are less likely.

Watched Reisner and the Vikes here last night. I thought he looked great blocking, but not very quick or speedy and had trouble getting open, which will obviously make it tough to make the team. He also wasn't afraid to hit people - he seemingly hit someone on every play, catching at least 1 Seahawk looking the wrong way and de-cleating him (then a Seahawk de-cleated Reisner immediately after Reisner's hit). As discussed earlier this wk in another thread, the other problem for Reisner is MN have some other athletic TE's, namely Kyle Rudolph.

Gallery also played LG for the Seahawks, and I'm fairly sure he was destroyed on a Viking interception that was returned for a TD. He looked like the DL Ballard blew up on the Angerer pick a couple years ago at PSU. Also, the Seahawk OL may be the worst OL I've ever seen - not necessarily due to Gallery, but my god are they terrible. They look comparable to what Stanzi is working w/ in KC...except Gallery is working w/ starters, not 2nd or 3rd stringers. I think Colin Cole is also on the Seattle DL, but I think he's hurt.

Greenwood

Odds are against him making the roster. Battling to be 3rd FS behind Clark/Mundy. Not sure he has the ability to play both safety spots, I could be wrong on that if I am it helps his chances.

If he makes the roster it will be because of special teams or they keep him on the practice squad.

Vandervelde

Played a lot in the Steelers/Eagles preseason game. Can play 3 spots on the line which makes him very valuable. Is a very smart dude, I would be surprised if he did not make the roster.

Greenway has been getting complaints from fans. I hear he will be booted from the team for that reason. It's a shame too, he was handing out autographs and high fives to my bros and I who drove up to rep the Hawks and see him in camp. No complaints from my end.

I've heard this as well. Bob Sanders was run out of Indy when he rebuffed a Hawk fan last season and we all know how Chuck Long's career ended after his refusal to sign autos for Hawk fans outside of the Silverdump one day. By all accounts, Hodge would have been a 4x Pro Bowler but no team will touch him with a ten foot pole. Do you know why?

Note on Greenwood, has a good shot of making the first round of cuts, the steelers have a ton of receivers on the roster, 4 QB(s), 2 punters and 2 place kickers. I think they will eliminate those guys first.

So how exactly does this work, because 53 barely sounds like enough to me.

If you're two deep at every position on offense and defense, add in a kicker and a punter, then maybe 7 special teams guys, you've got 53. Now what if your kicker gets injured and don't have a back-up? Plus you might go 3 or 4 deep at a position, which means you're light at another position. If a guy gets injured in the first few weeks, can they bring in someone else, say kicker or something to bring back to 53?

I emailed one of the beat writers from the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. He sees Greenwood battling for a spot on the practice squad.

Heard on KCRG last night that the Raven's have cut Kyle Calloway.

Makes sense the Steelers like him and he at least so far has had a good camp. Probably will get caught up in a numbers game, however.

If he can make the practice squad and if Mundy goes somewhere else after this year he can battle for a spot behind Clark next year. 4 or 500 hundred grand for being on the practice squad? That will go a long way in Pittsburgh. If he makes the practice squad it will be a decent chunk of change for a former walk-on from Pleasant Valley.

Donahue is engaged in a 32 team tryout.

Fletcher's a really solid player for STL. Did not see that coming a few years ago.

Dude, Practice Squad players DO NOT make over 100k a year. I don't know where you're getting 500 grand from, but the average safety doesn't even make 1 million per year, so I doubt the practice squad guys are getting half of that.

I saw an article about practice squad players and their pay. It was something like if they spent the entire 17 weeks on the practice squad that the were paid $96,000 or maybe it was $86,000. Either way, some pretty decent money.

It is $88,400, if the they spend an entire 17 weeks on the practice squad. Still that can go a long way in Pittsburgh. That $88,400 might have changed with the recent collective bargaining agreement.

Mike Humpal got injured during a steelers training camp a few years ago was put on the practice squad and later cut. I remember his salary being listed at 500 grand so that number stuck in my head. But thinking about it, he was a 6th rd. pick or could have been injury compensation.

FOR ONCE what you have posted is right, makes sense and is logical. That is my bad,, for not thinking about how big that number is and being lazy for not just looking it up.

Btw, there have been practice squad players paid well into the six figures.
