Hawks Evaluating a Host of Wing Players

they wouldnt be role players but next years team should be better. i dont think they get lockett. without him i see a solid starting five of:

pg - lucious
sg - babb
sf - clyburn
pf - ejim
c - gibson

much better inside outside balance and the fact that everything wont have to run through 1 player and they should be better. they lose a lot but they fill holes that were there this yr and the holes that are made. clyburn is going to make up for lots that is lost, gibson will be much better, lucious gives a true point. the main problem i see is that lucious could be a cancer but talent wise they are better.

iowa hopefully can play solid but we will be young and they are seasoned with transfer veterans and developing bigs.

Agree with everything here except for the fact that Lockett will be a Clone.

we will see on that. it would be scary to have lockett and clyburn at the wings. if that happens i see them as challenging for the big 12 title. never thought i would say that.

I don't think they are better next year. They lose 53% of their PPG, 40% of their RPG, and 69% of their APG. That is a tall order for any team. I doubt they finish 3rd in the Big12 or better, but they could still make the NCAA's.

The rebounding would be the biggest loss, IMO. The offense ran through Royce, which explains why such a large portion of their assists are gone. But Lucious and Clyburn will likely give them more offensive balance. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they do end up being better, even if they don't have a superstar.

Where does the confidence on Lockett stem from? Is it because he and Royce were HS teammates? That seems like a thin connection, but maybe there's more so that's why I'm asking. Just genuinely curious if there is something else out there that is leading to the confidence about him.

i think gibson will help with the rebounds because i think he will make major leaps and play a lot of minutes. plus ejim will play in his true position and booker will have a bigger role. i feel they will cover everything they lose and more.

With news of Frank Martin leaving for South Carolina, Iowa State's only competition is Baylor and Kansas and that's if no one leaves early for NBA. Big 12 won't have a single dominant team but 3 decent teams. Almost on PAC-12 level. Iowa State should be favored to win conference now. Good thing they have lots of transfers (upperclassmen) to help because after next season they graduate 6 (with Lockett included) to graduation making 2013 season look rough.

Just hearing some chatter that it is happening.

Are you serious with this post? When was the last time Kansas was just "decent"? Also, as long as Drew continues to be the coach at Baylor they will (against all odds) get elite talent and be much better than "decent".

Yes think this happens. Iowa doesn't need him but would be nice addition regardless but Iowa is set for 3 years with this roster. Iowa State may want to focus on getting a HS recruit considering adding him would make 6 seniors next season.

Getting the one year guys wouldn't hurt recruiting at all, because we already have the four high schoolers for next year and then they get to focus on high schoolers for 2013 as well. It'd be a nice bridge giving those high schoolers a year to develop. I hope we get Lockett and Oarikhi (sp?)

...a couple of hours away is a substantial upgrade from thirty hours away.
Exactly. They could easily see his home games. Players family &friends do that all the time.As for going to ISU, there is no Royce White. The benefit of going to ISU vanished. They lost their top 3 players, so they will be hurting. Iowa on the other hand is on the upswing, AND Lockett is the exact type of player that is our missing link.... He would be like Darrel Wilson was to Wisconsin football. Trent would put us over the top.
=

I didn't know that our defensive backs and special teams coach played for Wisconsin last season. That's crazy! Thank goodness we didn't have to play eachother. I wonder which side he would've picked.. ;)

Trent would be a huge pickup for Iowa though. Hopefully we can land him, but I won't get my hopes up. Ultimately, I think Fran pockets the scholly and saves it. I just don't think we'll land any of the guys that Fran thinks is worthy of an offer. I definitely could be wrong though, and hope I am.

As for ISU, I don't think they see too much of a drop off, if any. And the B12 won't be as good next season.

The BIGGEST question for any recruit going to ISU is that it is ALL a question mark. You have no idea how it is going to play out. None. Could they be good? Yeah, sure it is possible. Could they suck? Yep. Very possible....

As for Lockett, ISU is guard heavy. Why go somewhere where you know you will have your minutes shared for certain? Iowa has no proven transfers coming in. And we lost two starters. There minutes to be had for a proven, veteran player.

That is the same question mark that every program has that isn't going to a perennial top 15 school. Do you think that Iowa is guaranteed to not suck? I think that's far from certain.

If you think that winning is more certain at Iowa than it is at ISU, then you are just looking through black & gold glasses.

I personally am more certain that we'll be pretty good, than I was prior to this year.

Hey, ACG...is it official yet on TL yet? There seemed to be some buzz building yesterday.

I'm surprised at how good a coach Hoiberg has turned out to be given this was his first go round as a coach..No prior coaching experience to this -correct? I knew he would get plenty of rope since he is the Mayor in Clone country . The one thing he had going for him is the program was not nearly in as bad a shape as Iowa's when he took over.

You're right...no coaching experience, even as an assistant...just a lot of basketball IQ and a desire to help his alma mater...unlike that d-bag Cael Sanderson...

I think that was always the fear. I always had confidence that Hoiberg would be able to recruit and manage the team because he's a very likable person and had very good management experience.

The big question mark was whether he could coach or if he would be overwhelmed by the lack of experience. The other problem that Iowa can appreciate, is you feared that the program may be in such a big hole, that you don't get enough momentum fast enough. That doesn't appear to be the case for either school. Fortunately in b-ball you just need to get 1-2 difference makers and you can completely change the dynamics of your program.

As far as recruiting goes, I think Fred talked to some of his mentors and realized that ISU's situation required him to get an immediate infusion of talent. Hence the transfer model. That way he could win sooner than later. Once you win, better HS players will look at you. Probably a risky strategy, but digging out of a hole with HS players, that may not be all that great either, is risky too, IMO. Because if you go that route and you get to year 4 or 5 and your first couple of big HS classes are busts, you're pretty much screwed.

As far as X's & O's, I think basketball is much simpler, relative than say football. Fred has seen enough x's/o's in his playing days and then it's just a matter of running practices, scouting the opponent, putting a gameplan together.
