The Iowa basketball team beat South Dakota 87-63 on Tuesday night and overcame another tough outing from beyond the arc.
Iowa was just 2-14 from three, marking the fifth time this season where they have made four or fewer treys.

They've gone 7-16, 7-19, 8-15 and 8-19 in their other four games but the bottom line is becoming clear; this is a team that is simply going to struggle from beyond the arc this season. We knew that coming in and hoping it away didn't help. At some point this year, that will cost Iowa in a game against a team they should beat and/or prevent them from winning a close game against a ranked team. It didn't cost them against South Dakota, though the Hawks were sluggish through much of the first half.
South Dakota took a 25-24 lead with 7:42 to play in the first half before the Hawkeyes went on a 21-7 run to end the first half to lead 45-32. The Hawks outscored South Dakota 42-31 in the second half.
Iowa was 34 of 76 from the floor in the game, while South Dakota was 19-55 (34.5%). Iowa's 21 additional shots came from forcing seven more turnovers than they committed (11-18) and a +12 advantage on the offensive glass; the Hawks scored 23 points off turnovers and had a 24-4 advantage in second chance opportunities. Iowa had 20 assists on their 34 field goals. The Hawks were a sensational 17-19 from the free throw line and had a 54-14 advantage in the paint.
Aaron White led Iowa in scoring with 21 points to go along with six rebounds in 24 minutes. Devyn Marble scored 14 points and had eight boards in 30 minutes. Mike Gesell scored 12 and had four assists in a team high 31 minutes. Anthony Clemmons started his second straight game and had four points and eight assists but no turnovers in 21 minutes.
Adam Woodbury played just 16 minutes but was 5 of 6 from the floor and scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds. Gabe Olaseni scored eight points and grabbed a team best nine rebounds, including five on the offensive end.
The Hawkeyes moved to 7-2 on the season and will host the 7-2 Iowa State Cyclones on Friday night.
Iowa State is a dangerous team from beyond the arc, shooting nearly 39% on the year on 231 attempts. Iowa is shooting just over 31% on 161 attempts. On Tuesday night against Florida Gulf Coast, ISU was 13 of 25 from three; Iowa has yet to attempt that many three-pointers this year which is a good thing considering how poorly they have shot.
Three point defense and rebounding will play a factor in a big way on Friday night, as ISU is one of the best rebounding teams in the naiton. The game tips off at 7pm and will be televised (finally) on the Big Ten Network. Iowa's remaining 22 games will be available on cable and satellite.
