Hawkeyes Throttle Quincy

It looks like they did what they're suppose to do. Any concern about the 17 turnovers, or did they come in garbage time (which might have been most of the game)?

As I as I said in the article

There were a loyalty of sloppy turnovers at all times of the game.

Fran ran a lot of guys in and out. Those numbers will go down with more consistent rotations.

In a perfect world assuming no MAJOR injuries and Fran knows how to recruit and develop players.. both Meyer and Ingrahm will red-shirt. It will help out to balance out classes and give some really, experienced and solid players on the roster in the future.

25% of the turnovers came after the regulars began going to the bench and Woodbury had two early. Gesell did a good job taking care of the ball. That said, I've never seen a pressing and running team that didn't cough it up some. Turnover differential matters more to me under Fran.

Before we crown ourselves BIG champs and declare ourselves bound for the final 4, let's remember something. This was a horrible D2 team that we "throttled". Cmon already. Today told us NOTHING except that we can beat the crap out of a far superior team at the D2 level. And I'm not being a Debbie Downer. Simply trying to be realistic. The hype sometimes is ridiculous.

Who is crowning them? More specifically, what in my post that you quoted suggests hype?

I think this is a bubble team.

Who the h@ll cares if Iowa fans are enthusiastic about BB right now. We have been down for year, the football team is down, why NOT get excited about this season? Nobody will think it is a fail if we don't make the NCAA, but that doesn't mean that we can't all fired up and act like we will be there.

BTW if you put that in your post, that you AREN'T being a Debbie Downer, that really proves that even you realize that you are being Debbie Downer.

Sorry hog. No DD here. Just trying to be realistic. I'm as pumped as anybody about Hawkeye Bball this year. But please don't try to convince me we learned anything today playing against such weak competition.

You also got to be fair and say these were collegient athletes we played. Maybe they weren't recruited by Duke, Kansas, or Iowa :) but even the Kirkwoods of the world have better than average basketball players who would beat out most of the average high school basketball players.

I think you're fighting a one man battle, as I don't see where anyone was making this out to be more than it was, an exhibition against a team Iowa should throttle. But they're fun for the fans, it gets our juices going, particularly in a year when the football team is playing so poorly. A preseason exhibition game is not a time for fans to be reminded about being realistic. There's plenty of time for that as the season unfolds. Plus, I think the coaches do learn something from every game experience their players are exposed to.

No. The football team is bad, so we have to heap all of our expectations on the basketball team.

Positive: Iowa didn't struggle and might have in the past.

Neutral: It was Quincy. Never heard of any of the players on their roster. Many are from very small schools. Score was similar to highly regarded ND, but ND played at Quincy. ND led 19-2 really early.

Negative: Everyone looks better when the other team is noticeably slower. Can't tell a thing.

Take away 1: Show me what Gesell can do when his teammates are playing people faster than them and he has someone as fast or faster on him. His play is noticeably better than other running the O under that condition. If he can do it, the Hawks might move up this year. If not, expect a roller coaster year.

Take away 2: Show me what Woodbury can do with someone who is not as slow or slower than he is. Unless Woodbury can do it against speed, Gesell has to be better (more effective) than Matt Gatens. Tall order. Everything else is about the same. Too early to tell anything. Except the Hawks didn't struggle.

I don't think anybody is saying that Quincy was a measuring stick game. But it's better to see your team easily coast to a 46 point win, and could've been more, than seeing Lick's teams struggle to beat a similar opponent by 20 in an exhibition. Besides it's the first game of the year (even if it doesn't count), I think people are entitled to show some optimism.

Do you read this forum? I don't think anyone here has been predicting more than a run at the tourney, at best. You're like a child who wanders into the middle of a movie and wants to know...
