Hawkeyes the team to beat for Tyler Ulis

He'd be a really fun kid to watch for a few years I think. I'm not scared of his lack of size. And since all the D1 coaches that are recruiting him hard aren't either I'm rooting for coach Fran to work his magic. I'd heard awhile ago that he was pretty high on Northwestern in his back yard. He must have a head on his shoulders if they are in the picture for him.

good advice, wise one.

Just to add to that, I am not sure PG needs to be one of the top priorities for this class and if Iowa doesn't get Ulis or Narin all will not be lost.

There are some good PG's in the 2015 class that Iowa has offers out too as well.

I don't think Northwestern is really a contender at this point. Most would give a ~95% chance he goes to MSU or Iowa. Iowa appears to have the slightest of leads.

It will be interesting to see how Iowa's play this year affects the decision - I would assume if we do well (NCAA berth) it would help immensely over a massive fail fest. MSU will likely be in contention for a berth, as usual...gotta get the job done on the court and the good things will follow.

Speaking of massive fail fests.

The first signing period for basketball is in November. The 2013-2014 season will have very little, if any, impact on the 2014 recruiting class. Most players sign in the first signing period.

All wouldn't be lost, but it would be good to have a third point guard on the roster. I think Clemmons will develop very well, but in the event that he doesn't, or either he or Gesell get hurt, we could find ourselves wishing we had another option.

I agree with ya on all of that too. I'd seen an article from a NW site that had some quotes from him saying all the right things about NW and their new coach. The kid seems pretty smart is the gist of what I was saying I don't think NW is going to be in the final 2 or 3 for him either. MSU fans seem to think he's theres. I don't if they are going for 2 pgs this class. I doubt Ullis wants to be a part of a 2 pg class like MSU seems to be trying to get. I could be wrong though we'll see.

Good lord...nice attitude. I was just pointing out that winning helps everything.

As to the bolded, you said it yourself...MOST players sign in the fall period. MOST, not all. If Ulis was so hot to get on a roster, he could have done it already - since he hasn't, one could assume he wants to drag it out or is wanting more time to think about it.

Get over yourself.

It's very likely Ulis will commit and sign in November. Maybe he won't, but we can hardly bank on a good year swaying his decision.

Only 18 players in the top 50 are currently committed anywhere. It'd be surprising to see more than two players go through the first signing period without having made a decision. So the fact that Ulis hasn't committed yet doesn't say anything. He's got about 5 months to go, which is an eternity in this game.

The overwhelming majority of players who DON'T sign early are guys rated as 3 stars or lower. The top guys rarely stretch it out.

Andrew Wiggins begs to disagree...

The only players that wait until the spring signing period are guys that are having trouble qualifying academically or are the top few players in the country, just like Wiggins. The blue blood programs that offered him would hold a spot for him no matter what date he wanted to announce. Ulis would not have that luxury.

How can he get on a college roster when he hasnt even started his senior year of high school yet?

I dont think it has anything to do with Ulis wanting to "drag it out" as you said. He has only taken one of his 5 allowed official visits. He is going to narrow his list down to 4 after the AAU season is done and take his officials and then make a decision. Pretty standard timeline for a high school basketball player making this type of decision.

And to your first comment about my attitude, my post did not have an attitude. Its pretty common knowledge that this upcoming basketball season wont do much of anything for our chances with prospects in the 2014 class. It isnt hard, bud. Try and keep up.

Ulis has said that he wants to make his decision and commit before school starts this fall.

Look for him to announce in the first two weeks of August.

1). So, you agree with me. If Ulis is such a great recruit, then he could wait, just like Wiggins. We don't know for sure, it's his decision to make, on his timeframe.

2). He can't be 'on the roster' but of course he could have committed (verbal) already. Potato, Potahto.

3). I said, and I quote "since he hasn't, one could assume he wants to drag it out or is wanting more time to think about it.". Notice it could be he just wants more time...selective quotation means you lose the context, bud.

4). Attitude:

I was pointing out some logical reasons of why the upcoming season could have impact to his decision, meaning, making our chances a little better if things pan out. You decided to take it to a personal level, which wasn't really required.

Try to keep up.

I say it's rare, and you give me just one example out of countless recruits as evidence that I'm wrong with that assertion?

There are 32 players in the top 50 who are not committed at this point. I will guarantee that there won't be 32 unsigned players in the top 50 by the time the spring signing session rolls around. Because it's not unusual to be uncommitted in ******* June.

Like I said, maybe Ulis will stretch it out, maybe he won't. But the fact he hasn't committed yet lends no credence to either side of the argument. There are a lot of guys uncommitted right now, who will be before November.

Hell, Gesell waited until August to announce. Clemmons and Woodbury waited until September.

Fine...you guys win. I won't be surprised if he DOES commit this fall, but then I won't be surprised if he waits either.

I think we can ALL agree that the hawks having a good season this year will do wonders for recruiting - which really was my point before this all turned into a pizzing match.
