Hawkeyes open as 9 point favorites vs MSU

Yikes - Iowa by 9. Iowa RBs need to be ready

Ready to block maybe. I'm still absolutely beside myself trying to figure out how a QB in his 2nd collegiate start throws the ball 50 times in a game in which they were up by 17 early and never trailed by more than a possession. How do we have such hype surrounding our backfield and not run the ball more.

Because Fitz sold out to stop the run and our line isn't good enough to open holes against a loaded box. We pushed them around early and Northwestern's defense looked soft. Fitz then loaded the hell out of the box and challenged Petras to beat the 'Cats with his arm. It's not a mystery, that has been Iowa's formula for decades.

Because Alaric Jackson can't block 4 guys at once.

This is probably (as a whole) one of the weakest OL's Kurt Farence has ever put on the field at one time. Even Cronk, the wonder boy from Indiana, got pulled from the water because he was drowning.

I may have to hit a casino to bet the mortgage on MSU. We ain’t beating anybody by more than 3.

If you think historically, about two teams - one with a huge win then going on the road and the other with a stinging loss.

How did UM do when they visited Kinnick after Iowa came off a terrible loss on the road at PSU
How did OSU do after a huge win against PSU when they visited Kinnick
How did Iowa do after a huge win over OSU when they went to Camp Randal

just to name a few.... I think this could be in play

Yeah, but I've watched enough Iowa football to know when we have a bad team. And I know that when we have a bad team, they might still win a game or two that they shouldn't, but rarely are those wins by 8 points or more. There was that one year when Wisconsin broke our backs with that fake punt and then we walloped Sparty the next week, I think we beat some turd the next week and then we lost out. I've seen a lot of Hok teams really shit the bed in long streaks.

But maybe this is the breakout game for Petras. Hiding inside there is John Elway, just waiting to break out.

I see more Nolan Ryan

But like I said...Selling out to stop the run is one thing, but we ran the ball a total of 23 times in a game we lead the majority of the first 3 quarters. Even if they are selling out to stop the run I still think you have to run the ball not only to take time off the clock but to somewhat keep the defense on their toes.

I've seen all that too!

I've seen a peanut stand, I heard a rubber band, I've seen a polka dotted rail road tie. But I be done seen about everything....

It is not that complicated..... Petras has to make throws and be consistent with it throughout 4 quarters. I just shrug my shoulders at people complaining at the number of pass attempts versus the number of run attempts. The only way you get teams from stacking the box is to be successful throwing the football.

The thing that worries me about a line like that is it is too good to be true. Like if I took it, MSU would lose their whole coaching staff and Lombardi to The Germ and Iowa would win by 14 or something.
My luck is I would take Iowa and your scenario happens and Iowa would win by 8

The last 2 games I've watched Iowa get out muscled all over the field in almost every position. I'm guessing Vegas is predicting that Iowa "nuts up" in this game.

But since words hurt and we are more focused on feelings and the color of ones skin vs character, I don't see it happening. But that's like, just my opinion man.
I think they do nut up this game to try to turn the season and then lose the next two.

From there, it’s a crapshoot W/L-ing even the bad teams on the schedule.

3 score lead...incomplete passes stop the clock. I'm not saying run every down, but you have to find ways to eat the clock especially for a team that struggles offensively. 24 incomplete passes is a ton of time that we left on the clock. 6 of 17 on 3rd down means more to me than running the ball, but stacked box or not we averaged 4.3 yards per pass attempt and 8.3 per completion. I just see very little difference between 4.3 per attempt and the 3.3 yards a carry we had running the ball. Fact is successfully throwing the ball or not you have to attack them down field and our passing game wasn't able to do that.

Edit: I'll add that 3 scores in the first quarter means very little, but the fact is keeping the clock moving and limiting possessions is our entire philosophy...I don't see how you can coach with that mentality and throw the ball 50 times with an inexperienced QB.

No idea why Iowa would be favored there is NOTHING I've seen in 2 games showing me that this team is going anywhere. The offense is so milk toast pathetic and it's clear Kirk while softer, clearly doesn't have coaches that can move the competency on the offensive side of the ball. Listening to JDM on his podcast suggesting Kirk will step down after this year is pure folly IMO unless this is all just too hard at this age. I thought maybe the team would rally...it clearly hasn't. As a matter of fact it's bad. Phil Parker can probably keep his D effective but the rest of the program is just simply off.

Formations are more critical IMO. If you look at Goodson's TD run early it was the formation that created the wide hole for him to run through.

Didn't see a prediction thread, so I'll put it here. Iowa 34-13.
