HAWKEYES IN DRAFT

Where Iowa football players could be drafted this week, based on various mock drafts:

Desmond King, DB: Some projections have him going as high as early in the second round (No. 39 overall) to the New York Jets and as low as late in the third (No. 107), also to the Jets. Others have him going earlier in the third round to Dallas, Tennessee or the Los Angeles Rams.

Jaleel Johnson, DT: He also should go in the first four rounds with some of the projected destinations being Atlanta (second round, No. 63), San Diego (third, No. 71), Dallas (third, No. 92), Indianapolis (fourth, No. 121) and New York Giants (fourth, No. 140).

George Kittle, TE: The highest that any of the mock drafts have him going is the third round (No. 106) to the Seattle Seahawks. Others see him going in the fourth round to Baltimore (No. 122) or Indianapolis (No. 137) or in the fifth round to Houston (No. 169) or Miami (No. 178).

C.J. Beathard, QB: He is not mentioned in most of the mock drafts although he is certain to be signed by some team as a free agent.

Cole Croston, OT: He also is not mentioned in mock drafts but also will get a shot somewhere as a free agent.

I like Kittle and all, but does anybody else think he pretty much had a mediocre Iowa career overall? I'm not sure what the pundits or others are seeing, I guess.

Iowa is one of the few programs that still use TEs a lot in college and in the NFL, TEs are a huge part of a lot of offensive schemes. So lack of other options is one thing he has going for him.

Plus he has good speed for a TE and can block. That alone will get you drafted at TE

Yea, but I don't think Iowa used the TE as much in the Davis years as prior, not nearly as much. I think Iowa was down to the level of other teams, IMO. Either Davis never went to them or the TE's were never open. It didn't feel like Kittle got more than 2 catches a game at times.

I can see drafting him on his potential though, I just don't think it's been the same compared to previous years. Hopefully they are going back to that.

Based on this article link , and based on various mock drafts mentioned in the OP, I get the feeling that Beathard is over estimating his chances of getting drafted.

The scuttlebutt I was reading was that a few NFL scouts at least liked him and thought he was rising. He's in the top 10 for qbs and if there are 5 gone by the end of round 2 I like his chances of being a late round pick.

King - gone by late 2nd
Johnson - gone by mid 3rd
Kittle- gone by end of 4th
CJ - 6th
Mabin - 6th
Croston - 7th

Take those to the bank.

He missed a good chunk of the season with the ankle injury.......given Iowa's passing attack; especially late in the year, I doubt he would have put up big numbers regardless of the injury. He made himself a lot of money when he ran that 4.52 40.

Croston and Mabin won't be drafted, they'll get tryouts though. I've got
King 3rd round
Johnson, Kittle 4th round
C.J. late 5th, early 6th.

I was hoping LeShun would have a chance to get picked in the late rounds, but it looks like he picked the wrong year to become draft-eligible:

It is the best RB class since 2008. That, combined with the NFL's devaluing of the position (the average guaranteed $ for the top 5 highest paid RBs in the league is lower than the average guaranteed $ for any other position), means he will be fighting an uphill battle.

The thing he will have going for him (if you consider this a positive), is the "use 'em up and spit 'em out" nature of NFL RB usage. RB production typically peaks at age 26, and then drops precipitoussteeply after that (age 29 production 25% lower than peak, on average). So a cheap (assuming FA signing), capable player like LeShun who brings a great attitude and work ethic to the team could find a role eventually. A lot will come down to how adept he proves himself at special teams duties.

For what it is worth, Joe Mixon has been given a first-round grade by scouts. Rob had an article earlier this spring about his preference for Daniels over Mixon, based upon similar rushing production and character considerations. I think this must come down to versatility, which the NFL prizes in its backs. Mixon must have shown the scouts much more ability to contribute in the passing game.

Best of luck to LeShun, here's hoping that he finds a good fit and gets a chance to showcase his talent.

With Mixon you are getting someone with Le'veon Bell, David Johnson like ability on the cheap. You can put him in the slot and he will give you 60 catches.

It will be interesting to see where he goes. He is graded as 1st round talent, but he could probably drop to 3rd-5th considering the current climate.

Plus he can "slap some bitches around if they need it"...geez, this is the constant dilemma for a GM...do you take a chance on a kid with his background. Well, I know everyone deserves a second chance, but any a-hole who thinks it's ok to do what he did, doesn't deserve one. Cold cocking a woman is beyond anything that should be forgiven IMO and Ray Rice is a freaking punk too. Just my opinion.

What I find interesting is if it was a guy who got in Mixon's face like that and got knocked out we'd probably all be saying he deserved it, but because it was a female we think Mixon is a terrible human being.

Needless to say I think both Mixon and the girl learned harsh lessons from that night.

Yeah, it was a woman...so I think he's a complete douche. This is an NFL athlete cold cocking a woman. Terrible, terrible rebuttal dude. My thought is that if it was a guy of similar size, that Mixon probably wouldn't jack him for fear of getting his ass beat. I'm on the record of thinking he's a terrible human being. Listen, I've been married for 20 years...and I still can't fathom being angry and stupid enough to pull something like that. Do I hope he's reformed himself yes...would I take a chance on him if I was an owner, no.

What exactly did she learn...that he should be in jail? That she isn't good at taking a sucker punch from an NFL athlete. Great lessons all. He's lucky her father is obviously showing some sort of restraint. Someone did that to my daughter and I would have a really hard time trying to bury that anger.
